I think it's time for the big switch.

My twitter feed is vile at the moment.

Anyone else switching over?

Deleted it a couple of months ago. It’s a cesspit now with the good stuff completely overwhelmed by the unacceptable. You won’t regret leaving Elon’s sewer.

I gave it up years ago, but I wouldn’t replace it with a knock-off. I prefer communities based around my interests (not necessarily my priors), rather than all-comers.

Reminds me of this record, a lovely version of this old song.

Never joined it.
I know someone who had 30k followers and they are nice person so, not trolling.

One day they realised that it ate up all their time and gave zero benefit to them. They got nothing out of it. So, they deleted the account and the negative impact on their life? ... nothing!
It was a positive; they got their time.

Another person I know spent 11 hours a week on creating new Youtube content, creating it just for 1 hour actual play time. Did that for many, many weeks and got only a few subscribers. The content was good and relevant, but he looked like a normal person, not an influencer. He gave it up.

From what I can see social media success is pot luck and that luck goes as fast it arrives. And therefore the next load of tosh is fast pinging its way to you before you have deleted the last.

zzzzzzzzzz

Just signed up. Its Twitter as it was a few years ago in terms of functionality. Since the US election my X "For You" seems to have been turned up to max MAGA propeganda with a smattering of porn, Tommy Robinson and violence. It's such a shame.

I hope people make the switch to blue sky but its not yet got the volume of posts etc

Will be joining you and Brian and giving it a try.
twitter has become a cesspit of absolute right wing nonsense, yaxley lennon, fox and all those other morons that I have absolutely no connection with but appear on my feed more than the stuff I follow. Such a shame because I used to enjoy flitting in and out of it.... now it just makes me angry....

Considering it. Twitter used to be so good but has been ruined by Musk.

I have been able to manage my feed so I avoid most of the worst stuff (I don't click on the "for you" tab which is where a lot of it will be found) but being on there doesn't sit that well with me given who runs it and how he's using it.

So is Bluesky any good? I tried Threads but it doesn't seem to be up to much.

Is it because you now have to cope with other views that don't concur with your own?

I've never used / participated, in any of these er ..feeds., I don't need an echo chamber, I have my own values.

No, it isn't that. It is having extreme views often directed by the owner forced on people. There is no balance. Musk bought the platform for this very reason. Its just another media attempt at mind control and has been quite successful.

I use Twitter for mostly football related banter etc which it used to be brilliant for and sometimes still is. Social media started going downhill in general when it got political some years back. Facebook no better, although it does seem to have eased up a bit more recently. Or maybe I just don't see it any more after unfollowing the worst accounts.

I too have been thinking of coming off X. I've always managed to avoid the worse stuff on there by keeping a very low profile.

Does anyone use Threads which has a much larger number of posters?

Funnily enough, there's an article about Bluesky in the Guardian this morning https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/12/us-election-bluesky-users-fle

Joined Twitter over 15 years ago to join QPR chat and info naively thinking QPR supporters would all be one big family 🤣. Within days I’d been informed that there was death threats and stalkers and all sorts of bile…just among R’s fans .
Ditched it some years ago as the hatred is just too much .

Maybe because I'm not entrenched in one particular political ideology, and because I really don't trust msm to report everything, and to report stories from a neutral standpoint, I use it as my main news source these days. With saying that, comes the knowledge that there's a lot of bullshit on there, so I treat stories with scepticism, and use it as a starting point, and not the truth.
I also follow a lot of artists, iom bird observatory etc. I won't touch tiktok, mind.
I don't get any porn, which pretty much disproved the efficiency of the algorithms.....

All my regular feeds on photography, music, books etc have been swamped for some months now. Instead, I'm getting lots and lots of violence - fights, car crashes etc - hatred of every type imaginable, and - yes, lots of porn.

And, for the last week I'm getting hundred of Arsenal feeds.

Arsenal...oh, the humanity!

With you, the algorithm is strong, my friend. Arsenal? Not happening to me, you must have upset Musk.

Anyway, given your new position as most popular poster (in a thread you clearly started with a fake account and swamped with votes from your fake accounts, while my popularity goes without saying and is, thus, unsaid), does this make you a social influencer?
And, being a supporter of x, I know that......McCARTHY IS IN THE PAYROLL OF BLUESKY.

Good question.

I myself hadn’t heard of Blue Sky but googled for a definition and it says;
There is now Bluesky and Mastodon, which generally lean left or liberal.

I hope LFW’s chief influencer isn’t turning this site political again.
2

Bluesky on 08:17 - Nov 12 with 3905 viewsLanhoop

I don’t think they deliberately lean left it’s just that X has been flooded by more right wing content (supported by Musk and his curation algorithms) and so the more left audience are the ones that have moved. The right are staying on X because their content is there. Hopefully over time we will see more balance on all of them but I fear there will be more polarisation instead.

I've been wanting to leave Twitter for a while now, I tried Mastodon when the initial wave of people started trying to leave Twitter but it never really seemed to take off so I stopped using it.

The only reason I use Twitter is to see what's happening in the world, see news as it's happening and see updates from QPR. I never use it to post. It's overrun with fake accounts and bots farming for clicks. I will give Bluesky a go, hopefully it can replace Twitter because I hate giving Musk money from seeing the terrible adverts on the platform.

For anyone that has not seen the latest Led By Donkeys video on Musk/Twitter:

I'm honestly surprised to hear people reporting their twitter feeds being swamped by stuff, because that is not my experience at all. I don't get any porn-related stuff, or any of the other unwanted stuff that you're reporting. Can it be that you're simply using it the wrong way? What I mean is that you have two basic viewing options: 'For you' or 'Following'. So I use 'Following' and that's it: I get the feeds I've chosen.

Regarding Elon Musk's take-over - personally speaking - and not wanting to start a tirade of opposing views - I'm glad he supports free speech. I am genuinely terrified by the attempts to shut free speech down by so-called Liberal regimes, who seem to want to completely control the narrative - under the aegis of so-called hate speech and so on - in order to stop anyone posting things they don't like.

Sure, many of you will disagree, but that's fine, that's free speech! Vive la difference - who wants cultural orthodoxy??

I think most if not all people want free speech. The question here is, does Musk honestly believe in it? I think not but he certainly isn't the only media magnate that pays lip service to the idea but in practice doesn't stand for it.

The search for a factual, true and free news source is not an easy one.

So this is where the anomaly is for me. I use the following option - but still I get random Yaxley threads, Fox threads and other toxic, bigoted nonsense on my account.
I have absolutely no issue with all of these click for money grifter accounts existing and having the 'free speech' option of spouting their rhetoric - as has been proved, they seem to find their audience, much like the incel audience do (quite often the same people) What I object to is it being pushed onto me.
This then questions the narrative of where exactly the control lies. Personally, I think Musk only supports free speech when he can control who is seeing what and when.
I don't want to close anything down, or stop anyone posting whatever floats their boat, I just want the fact that I have not elected in to be observed.
