Club Shots OnTarget Goals On target % Goals% SOT
CrystalPalace 143 49 8 34.3 16.3
Everton 109 37 10 33.9 27
Ipswich 100 30 10 30 33.3
LeicesterCity 107 32 14 29.9 43.8
Wolverhampton 103 43 14 41.7 32.6
Southampton 102 34 7 33.3 20.6

We are not shooting much less than the other strugglers, and our shots on target compares favourably. Our strikers just aren’t up to the job.

I just spent ages getting all this aligned, then when I posted, it took out all the formatting. Doh!

Fair point, but we have improved in recent games, so hopefully we will pick up more goals and points, but it does need addressing in January

Our strikers aren't good enough but could be better if played under better tactics etc
Armstrong had the audacity to stray from the wing to the middle and guess what he scored.

Bree scored from outside the box and was dropped.

The summer transfer policy and tactical strategy were that we were going to buy a load of left wingers and they were all going to play on the left wing. The masterminds at the club were shocked when this didn't work and things got worse when they were unable to persuade the Premier League to let us move the goal posts at St Mary's over to the left side of the pitch.

That's not the key issue. There is an element of truth in what you're saying, but the main problem is that the chances that we create aren't good enough, mainly because we take so bloody long to create them. So, we might have a shot after 100 passes when the box is crowded with defenders. No surprise the shot doesn't go in.

Every stat should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the xG (expected goals) stat does a pretty good job of showing how many goals you should score for the chances you create. A 1 yard tap in to an empty net has an xG of 1, a snatched chance in a crowded box might be 0.1. So, any team that does an average job of finishing chances will score the same number of goals as their xG.

Our xG is the second lowest in the league:

https://footystats.org/england/premier-league/xg

This says that if our finishing was average, we'd still have scored the second lowest number of goals in the league. Also, as shown in the table, our xGD (xG goal difference) is the worst in the league. In terms of quality chances created vs quality chances conceded, we are the worst.

So yes our strikers could be better, but even if we had the best finishers in the world we'd still be going down because we don't create quality chances and we offer up lots of easy goals against.

How many games has it been where it has taken us nion 40 minutes to have a sôdding shot. That is my absolute major beef of it all. Even if we have to play this possession based snooze fest, doesn’t mean we should not be trying to rattle off more shots for gods sake

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

It would help if our strikers played as that and not wingers maybe?
