Sunderland Reflection 17:46 - Nov 2 with 2900 viewsbluenwhite10

If I said to you at the start of the game we are playing the in form team who sit at the top of the league without our best centre half (Clarke-Salter) best full back (Paal) Best forward (Frey) One of our most important midfielders in terms of balance to the team (Colback) and a teenager making his 1st startin midfield, we would of only seen one outcome and it wouldn’t of been pleasant so in theory it is a good point, but a little part of me feels disappointed it was not 3 but I would of took that point all day long eve at the point of the sending off.

The game itself we started really well and for the 1st 15 we looked really good.

I had a feeling that we would pay for the missed chances ,Celar chance looked harder to miss and surprised he went at it with his left foot instead of his right.

The second half after the sending off highlighted the problem we have in we do struggle to unlock teams and even though Dunne did well in winning his header from Chairs cross he should have scored.

Some very good performances today, Dunne, Cook, Morgan, Chair, Field and people might disagree with me on this one but I think Madsen played well and showed some nice touches and passes especially one in the 1st half a turn and pass which took out 2 players… I said it before but I think we have a player here but he needs to adjust and get upto speed.

My MOM today he I thought looked good and strong and won most 50/50 was Varane who looked quality. In summary a great team performance and a good point but gutted in our position it was not more but undefeated against 2 very strong sides Burnley and Sunderland and not conceding a goal is unexpected.

A really good 0-0 to watch if you had no emotional interest.

I thought Madsen did ok in the first half, sprayed a few nice passes around and actually got stuck in a few times.

I thought his attempt to block their shot that hit the post was lame.

He was forever pointing where the ball should be played but the player in possession rarely took notice. At least twice he played a short ball in to someone who expected him to move forward for a one , two, but he just stood still. Hence my earlier comment of him being on a different wavelength at times.

I thought he should have been taken off earlier.

Think that's harsh on Madsen.

I think especially first half he put himself about and a few nice touches that unlocked defences occasionally

We had 2 excellent chances to win it . Celar first half and Dunne header in the 2nd.

Don't understand how Sunderland are top after watching that tbh but I suppose it shows how crap the Championship is .

Was really impressed with Varane today. And after losing it with Celar first half, he at least did a couple of half decent things second half.

If you had told me a week ago we would fail to score against both Burnley and Sunderland, I would have believed you. But if you had said we wouldn't concede either.....

Felt like the first time for a bit we can think that we should be OK this season.

Agree with lots of that but on the evidence of the last three games of which Paal has played only a few minutes. He’s not our best full back .
I like him but we look defensively a lot more solid without him .

Enjoyed today but we desperately lack a cutting edge.

However, the last two results mean nothing if we lose on Tuesday night. Win and it's five points from nine, including two clean sheets against teams at the top end of the table.

This.
We win on Tuesday, today really is an excellent point.
We don't win on Tuesday, today really is two points dropped.

Better all round performance. Varane, Madsen and Morgan performed well in midfield and Chair getting back to fitness. Problem is we have no striker, Celar just not really on it is he!

I went to the game expecting the worst. The first ten minutes were great and the fade away I expected didn't happen. Overall, pretty pleased with a very competent performance.

The Celar chance in the first half was right in front of me and was more difficult than it may have looked from elsewhere. It was hit at him pretty hard and not at an ideal angle. That said, we look so lacking in goal threat. It was the primary 'issue' today.

Varane looked like the player we believed we had signed. Masden's effort levels were higher. The young lad in midfield was positive in progressing the ball forward more swiflty. Field was excellent. Chair is understandably still shaking off the rust.

I've walked away feeling positive...but continue to worry how much the inability to score will impact us in the long run. Even if we continue to play as well, can we grab the points we need with such a blunt attack?

I don't like him one little bit - can't defend, can't beat a man, can't cross.

Has a lovely touch, but that is it. He has NOTHING else, NOTHING.

Its no coincidence that without him in the team, we are now competing.

Get him gone in January.

Can we go out yet?

To be fair to Paal, during the close season it had been announced we were trying to sell him. We did not get the offers we wanted and if your employer is trying to get rid of you but hasn't been able to, it's going to affect your confidence and motivation.

Last season, into late February, I think he was joint leading scorer and I believe was close to ever present.

He has made mistakes this season but I can see why it could have happened. And he literally had no other left back in the squad when we strangely loaned out Larkeche.

Watched on CBS Sports stream in US and solo Brit commentator they had working the game was rightly v complimentary about Rangers performance. Even called Varane a 'monster' at one point. Four things struck me from afar:

1. Team moved the ball far more quickly than most games this season, especially first half, with a number of rapid one-twos creating space. Looks like something they had worked on. Got bogged down 2nd half when Mackems went into defensive shell.

2. Had the spectacle of Sunderland blatantly time wasting from sending off for rest of the game. Their keeper Moore booked on 70 minutes but did not seem to affect his speed of movement for the rest of the time out there. (Was he warned again by ref? Kind of thing you can't pick up streaming.)

3.Field looked far more comfortable at CB than in any of his other fill-in games at the back.

4. We got after them in midfield and pressed their defenders. They did not like it up 'em! Heartening to see.

I was very encouraged by that today, walked away thinking if we can build on that we’ll be fine.

Finally we look solid, we neutralised another dangerous team, you could see patterns of play particularly in the first half where Madsen and Smyth in particular were linking up really well.

Varane was physical and out muscled their midfield, Morgan is a total bonus out of the blue and looks like a player.

Field was good at centre back and I reckon he should stay there.

Random shout out for Santos who must be our fifth choice left back but did well and he’s a beast in the air

We’re a firing centre forward away from an alright team, hopefully it’s Celar. He actually woke up today and the red card seemed to fire him up. When he actually scores there’s going to be a pitch invasion

I expect us to draw 0-0 again at best! Lump on!

Poll: What should the club do now (assuming no imminent change of owners)?
