Tony Blair 12:39 - Oct 15 with 932 views | mangohilljack | Anybody remember the first piece of legislation he put through in 97 when he formed the government? Don't bother searching his manifesto as it wasn't in there. So he took the death penalty out of the "the treason act" Anybody know why that would be a number 1 priority ? Doesn't take a rocket scientist does it!!

That policy surfaced a couple of years into Blair's first term, and under Milburn and others there was a move to create a market in which any hospital provider willing to do the work at the NHS tariff, and meeting required quality accreditation standards, could join in. As far as I can see, Wes Streeting is still talking very much along the same lines as in this article from 2022. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59910107#:~:text=Mr%20Streeting%20told%20 Will we see increasing numbers of patients channelled through private hospitals and even a new wave of PFI contracts for capital developments? The WG are doing some of the latter, albeit relabelled as Mutual Investment Model (MIM) schemes. If so, I don't myself automatically condemn all such arrangements, but many on the left will be unhappy.

Diana put it about a bit and it probably wouldn’t have been popular to have had to hang a load of doctors, soldiers and half the England rugby team.

Tony Blair on 18:02 - Oct 15 with 774 views | SullutaCreturned | What? the PFI/MIM model has cost this country billions, it has practically bankrupted many an NHS trust, it was and is a shocking thing and an absolute waste of a lot of money. There had to/has to be a cheaper way. Quite a few people think Blair took out the death penalty because he inyended to sell this country down the river. A lot of people think he belongs on trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity, him AND Bush. PS, the WG ha spent a lot of money on interest payments, spent more than double the actual cost in most coases where they used MIM, the new Velindre, the heads of the valleys road development...I'm sure others could name more.
Tony Blair on 21:53 - Oct 15 with 700 views | majorraglan | Why do you say or what evidence is there that it was his number 1 priority? The death penalty for treason was removed when the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 was passed by Parliament in 1998. The C&D Act 1998 was the legislation that introduced ASBO’s, parenting orders, sex offender orders and host of other things. The Act also formally abolished the death sentence for Treason and Piracy, the death sentence had already been abolished for everything else many years earlier. All the government did was tidy things up.
Tony Blair on 22:09 - Oct 15 with 690 views | AnotherJohn | I am not a fan of PFI, or the relabelled version one finds in Wales and Scotland (which has more projects of this kind than Wales). Rather, I am suggesting that in a period when public finances are tight and the NHS is in dire straits, Labour will be tempted, especially given what Streeting has said. His main thing to begin with will be NHS patients in private hospitals. As I said, this would be an example of Blair/Brown policies resurfacing. I said I am not automatically against all public/private partnerships because there may be some cases where they work. One local example which provided dialysis services for West Wales over many years when alternative funding seemed very difficult is the kidney unit at Glanwily run in partnership with Fresenius Medical Care. As you say most such deals are dreadful value. [Post edited 15 Oct 22:25]

Blair and his odious Misses ran away into the long grass after being unable to give honest answers to awkward questions , there again Politicians in general all lie , some live with it as part and parcel of a voting system we still have , my seat and status is safe so ok by me . Nu Labour and Tony promised change , alas another figure at the helm of the UK more concerned with future book sales and after dinner speaking circuit money making . Seems that lovable rogue Bojo s book is on the shelves now , any good I wonder .
