Can anyone give me an explanation why we have everyone back for corners especially when we have players like Dembele and Saito who wouldn't win a header on a step ladder !

Even my son''s under 16 team put a player up front so at least 2 defenders have to mark them .

I've got a lot of time for Marti and certainly not panicking like others on here but this just seems an easy fix and would potentially stop the opposition having a free shots from the edge of the area when we do manage to clear a corner !

Absolutely.

Last season we were conceding so regularly from corners that it was like giving away a penalty. So they began bringing everyone back for them, and it helped stem that flow of goals.

Bare bones.

It makes no sense to me either when you have someone with Smyths pace to stick on the halfway line and occupy two of their players. To pull everyone back is inviting what happened last night. Also how is it that they have worked out a couple of effective corner routines that they used and were succesfull and we just lump it into the box every time and hope for the best. Last night prior to the first goal they executed one routine and nearly scored and then on the very next corner executed exactly the same routine and scored all be it with a bit of fortune, why were we not awake to it ?

I get it in general, particularly the way we were conceding from them last year, but it made no sense at all last night with the way Hull set up and the way they've been conceding goals from their own corners all season.

Why not even keep two lads up top, one on each corner of the halfway line, leaving a massive hole in the middle, really f**k with their heads.

I thought conceding from corners last year was remedied by Jimmy Dunne being recalled

Leave one up and you outnumber them , I would bin off this zonal or hybrid system and go man to man .

Ainsworth played man to man it was not exactly a rip roaring success. The team is smaller and not as strong (Saito and Dembele ahead of Chair and Willock) this year as well. The last 3 goals from set pieces have all come from short corner routines leading to something in the second phase. We miss Chair just as much for what he does defensively as for his attacking abilities

The first two goals were down to poor play from Hull short corner routines, it happened a lot in the first half. They also got a bit of luck with both goals but Anderson (& others) need to do better defending the boxes and making important tackles.

As for all players coming back to defend at corners.....there are 'pros & cons' either way, not a right or wrong thing.

Johnson used to do that at Bristol.

I've always thought that, given you've always got one extra player (keeper), then reducing the number of players in the box one-for-one gives you a bigger defensive edge, that is, 3 marking 2 gives you an advantage over 9 marking 8, for example...??

in addition, its the attackers who benefit from chaos. Getting more players up the pitch helps the defence by my making the penalty box less chaotic and more orderly.

Poll: Who had the better brace?

I'm all for it.

We position two men on each corner of the halfway line, leaving centre circle empty. If they drop a third man back, it means they've got three players deep, making it 7 vs. 9 in our box.

Nardi catches the cross, bowls it down the middle and sparks a 4-man footrace. Best man wins.

Unless I am going mad, I’m sure we did exactly that at some stage last season.
