Smyth's goal 21:50 - Sep 29 with 5873 viewsstainrods_elbow

Can't understand why everyone isn't up in arms about this. If anything, for me, that decision was so rank it looked like corruption and was even worse than the red card. The fact that Smyth also made his outrage felt as loudly as he did also makes Cook's and his team-mates' lack of support look awful, and Marti didn't even mention it after in that hard-hitting club interview by our resident teenager, inexplicably. At 2-1, I wouldn't have bet against us snatching a draw.

Would anyone on this board seriously claim it was a foul at any level of football? Though I don't think I'll feel any less sick today about yesterday's utter charade, whatever anyone says.

I commented on the match thread (or somewhere else) that I couldn’t see anything wrong with it, he robbed the defender who just fell over, absolutely no foul whatsoever.

Those on here who say Smyth can't finish also conspicuous by their silence, as people tend to be when their thesis is undermined.

I was furious at the time and still fuming now .

Not one hint of a foul by Smyth anywhere in the lead up .
It felt like the ref, the Sky commentary team and everybody else were there to see home a Blackburn win.
Scandalous decision

it wasn't a foul but the ref blew long before he took the shot and their keeper just let it go in, i think he'd have saved that if ref had played on

Even if the club shows the balls neither the team nor the manager managed to during or after the game and reports it, I'm sure Nourry will have an algorithmic reason not to tell us. Perhaps someone can ask a counter-cultural question about it at the FF(S) anyway.

Having watched it back, I suppose he does, but my question remains regardless: blew for what?

Perfectly good goal. Much more annoyed about this than the red card.

Pawson felt all day to me like a Premier League referee a bit pissd off to be slumming it with the likes of us. Often in the way of the play, lazy decisions, phoned in performance. Much easier to just give the free kick there so he gives it. I thought for a referee who's doing Champions League football this season it was pretty appalling really.

But, in the interests of 'no excuses culture' and 'control what you can control' - Smyth misses an absolute sitter in the six yard box after five minutes when we'd started quite well. Score that, take it out of the referee's hands.

Smyth should have scored that chance, though I don't necessarily agree it was a total 'sitter'. But my whole point is he (we) DID score a perfectly good goal, which was chalked off, and which may well have helped us secure a fighting draw.

He thought Smyth pushed him over which he didn't but is the only thing I can think of, he blew straight away

"A fighting draw".

You have to fight for those.

He took the easy way out. Did it all afternoon. Didn't want to be there.

If cards can be retrospectively rescinded, I see no reason why legitimate goals can't be re-awarded (and refs demoted, if not exterminated). For me, we lost 2-1 in a game we could quite possibly have drawn.

Of course goals can’t be added as it’s all in the past. The butterfly effect and all as the whole match changes if one or other team score. You can’t just go back and artificially change a score.

Bookings and red cards are different as they have impacts on future games

He can't finish. 6 yards out, first 10 minutes, cocks it up. Game changing miss.
He simply isn't good enough and sooner he's back on the bench the better.

With regards to his 'goal', it was disallowed.

He's a winger, not a striker. Yes, ideally, he'd score 10 from the flanks, but he has other attributes. Even so, the (good) goal he scored was one more than anyone else did. Perhaps you should turn your attentions to Mr Celar!

What good attributes? Plus the whistle had already gone, the goalie would have got that else.
You miss from 5 yards out, away from home, in the first 10 minutes. Enough said.

Check out the Wolves goal against Liverpool at the weekend. Exactly the same scenario at the start where the Wolves player robs the Liverpool centre half. No issues from the ref in allowing play to continue.

I'll bite.
Smyth can't finish. His level is League 1 at best.
Its the Jamie Mackie syndrome, I've seen whippets run around a lot, but they are not elite professional footballers.

This was poor signing by Gareth Ainsworth, probably more for the work ethic and dressing room than to score goals or provide assists.

I don't have the answers, he's probably not on a huge wage, but I think he should be used as a substitute when we are desperate.

I don't think he gets the decisions, because he dives too much and annoys the referee.
A bit like Manning used to.
I wonder if it is similar for his team mates, as I agree they were conspicuous in their absence for any appeals about that decision

We clearly didn't take many notes from Plymouth on how to play out a draw with 10 men. Sigh.

His finish for the disallowed goal was poor too. Mid-height and too close to the goalie, who probably would have saved it had the whistle already not gone.

This.

It's a bit of a cheek for us to moan about Smyth not getting a decision going his way when he appears totally obsessed with diving to win free kicks.

He looks a marked man to me in referees' circles. He rarely gets a decision because of it.

Stay on your feet, Paul. Mind you, with his end product, maybe I get his point.

A stopped clock is right twice a day.

And while I like his effort, sadly we won't improve as a team with Smyth as a regular starter - we've signed him twice and he still can't be relied upon to provide decent crosses or indeed finish. If he scores that first chance, it's a very different game. Players can only have so many chances - if they persistently fail to push on and improve, then we should be brutal.
