Blimey Forty years ago today around 500 of us traipsed up to York for the LC 1st leg (what was the point of those 2 legged rounds) to see us win 2 4. A notable night as it was our first glimpse of York forward, John Byrne! He impressed in both games and the rest is history.

York still sticks in my mind as the worst away ground toilets I’ve ever seen. Basically a brick-walled area next the terrace with no roof where you piss up against a wall into a trench

Absolutely destroyed the Venables legacy. But he gave us Bannister, Byrne, Forest at home and THAT Newcastle game. Beyond that he was a complete clusterfck; up there with Hart, Hughes, Bosingwa, Chris Wright and Vinnie Jones in the "if they were on fire" category

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that Bannister's signing was already lined up when TV was still there so Mullery can't take much of the credit for that.
Ayresome Park was pretty basic, From memory theirs consisted of a wall with the word 'Toilet', not overly sure whether that was to describe the facilities or the whole ground.
Maybe Adrian Durham should do a Top (or Bottom) 10 worst football grounds he's been to.
I've not had the pleasure of visiting this fine facility, so I can't get past Layer Road, Colchester as my choice.
My recollection is one sit down & three stand ups for the whole of the away end. Our matches there in the early 00's were great fun!
Back to topic! John Byrne was a player who I liked & had lot's of time for. Alongside Don Masson as the two players I'm pleased we signed after they performed well against us. Stanley as well, of course, but I can't accept that he wasn't already on our radar!

Portsmouth spent loads of money on a brand new super smart home stand and left the away with nothing but some seats and nothing else. The toilet was some sort of cave.
Strong and stable my arse.

God knows why but I was at the crewe away game and Dave Thomas questioning my sanity for attending. Reality is back then was , I had football mates, regular mates who followed other clubs and some who transitioned into both. It’s a beautiful thing. Bumped into a few last time I was back.
