If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

You're right in us needing CB's and another striker, however all of last season we were essentially running on 2 midfielders in Gilmour and East which couldn't happen again for this season, especially with no Keohane.

We still probably need another right-back as well talking about Jimmy.

Having watched the friendly at Macc it was obvious the centre of defence is a weakness, the defence was pulled all over the place on numerous occasions with our keepers having to make at least a couple of one on one saves. Ferguson is fine in the air but everything else about his game worries me, just my opinion. There was also a insistence on long balls from the back up to Mitchell from the goalkeeper, which is fair enough if he can win the header or hold up the ball to bring others into play, he struggled to perform any of those tasks. We need another forward, somebody with the body strength of Chris Ogrady would be handy. I thought the midfield and wide players all looked decent, as did the new signings. I haven't seen McNultys verdict on the game, not sure how he viewed it.

In respect to the right back issue, I tend to agree, yes we have adebayo-rowling, but he is often used as a wing back, so the question, is he more suited to the right wing, then right back.

I cannot understand why just over two weeks before the first game, we have only two CD's, including one, who based on last season is injury prone, this could be our achilles heel this season. I have also said before, that we need another striker, we have Oscar Kelly (who can operate as a second striker), we have Tolu Lapado on trial who is a striker, but is inexperienced.

Oscar Kelly hasn't progressed from the start of last season, if he had kicked on then i'm sure McNulty would have used him. I think we need a striker with some physicalty and Kelly doesn't have that. Lapado played out on the wing at Macc and didn't look like he was the answer, he didn't get into the game. I was impressed with Adebayo - Rowling, he looked more like a right winger though than a defender. You can only bring young players in at this level if they are good enough. I've seen several youth team players names mentioned but don't agree they should just be given a chance for the sake of it. The manager needs to acquire the best squad ofplayers he can, winning games is the priority.

Maybe the manager hasn't yet found suitable centre-backs and no matter how many times you mention it, I'm fairly certain he's also aware of the situation.

Oscar Kelly has hardly challenged the first team since his debut a couple of years ago and the trialist you refer to was played on the wing on Tuesday and contributed nothing.

I hope so, but at times I have my doubts.

Niall Maher and Rob Harker are apparently still free agents.

Which I'm sure all managers are aware of.

Niall Maher on trial at Bradford, so looks set for a stay in League Two possibly.

Two more trialists in the starting line-up at Avro tonight.

Dale lose 1-0 and miss a penalty

Looked to be a second string lineup.
Barlow hit the bar with a penalty.
Saturday’s team should give a truer reflection of who will start at Boston a week later.

A completely different starting eleven to the one we saw against Carlisle, I don't think any of those players travelled to Avro. So a team made up of youth players, trialists, a few fringe players and a few of our new signings. Loads of positives to take from the game and our recent signings all looked good as did the two trialists. We missed loads of chances and should have scored three or four goals on the night, Rodney and Mitchell would have probably bagged. Avro were a big, strong physical team and got stuck in. Barlow missed the penalty but he made the midfield tick and linked up the play. Burger is skilful and direct and Odi has pace and trickery, a upgrade on Jaz.

I thought Burger was the standout player for us. He's a midfielder who moves with the ball, something we've been missing. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him. Barlow has obvious technical ability. I thought he looked off the pace at times and gave the ball away a bit too much (playing passes others don't, so they may come off other times). That said, it's pre-season and he's not had much football. A player of that calibre as a fourth choice isn't bad at all. As I said on another thread, I think Edwards is streets ahead of the other kids and most likely to feature in the squad.

I can't shake the opinion that Armstrong is a poor signing. Last night did nothing to change that. I lost count of the amount of times he could have played a quick ball to Alfa, even Jim was screaming to give it to him. Then in the second half he gets rinsed then outpaced by their big forward. He must be ace in training because it can't be his performances in games that got him a 2 year deal. Keep Beckwith fit at all costs.

Alfa is an upgrade on Jes from what I've seen. He always wants the ball and shows strength when he has it. Several good balls into the box from the left too, which shows there is an end product there. I don't know if its just him or under strict instruction, but he absolutely hugged that left touchline. That's a proper old school winger trait.

I thought both trialists were quiet in the first half, but more in the game in the second. Both played on the right side in the first half, with 'Trialist B' playing more central in the second half where he showed some nice touches and vision on a few occasions. I think there is a player there. The young lad 'Trialist A' could have seen more of the ball. On the occasion he did get through on goal he blazed over.

We are desperate for another centre back. That is not a secret. To anybody.

Despite it being very much a second string and a mixed performance, I'm still encouraged, especially by the new signings. There seems to be a genuine emphasis on looking or moving forward with the ball. Long may that continue.

How did the youth team players do last night?

I will tend to agree, I think Armstrong will be use as general cover for Beckwith, the question on the right side of defence would you start with Gordon or Adebayo-Rowling?

(82’ Bailey) - not on long but had a decent run up the left. Lively.
(63’ Akpan) - did OK. Put himself about and was OK with the ball. Managed to get booked for a rash challenge.
(82’ Clift) - not on long, nothing stands out.
Edwards - pick of the bunch. Has grown physically and clearly talented. A few misplaced passes but think he has a bright future.
Burgess - like Edwards, has grown physically. Unlike Edwards, I don't think he's as talented. Slow and negative with the ball.
(69’ O Kelly) - showed glimpses but nothing like this time last pre-season.

You're tricking me into talking about centre backs :) Current players, I'd say we go three at the back and play Gordon as the RCB and Adebayo-Rowling as RWB. If it becomes a back four, I'd play Gordon at RB at the moment, I don't know about Adebayo Rowling's defensive qualities. If we sign another centre back, who is right footed, I think we probably play with a back three and Gordon misses out.

Would I do that!

I am working on the basis of us playing a 3-5-2 system.
