Well, generally they were that in the 90s and early 00s, quite a lot got bought up by competitors and/or venture capital and eventually have been (or are planning to be) sold on to big multinational crops.

Britain is in the logical state a country ends in when there is a monopoly economy run in the interests of those who own the means of production. I only believe these things because it is the material conditions of 2024 Britain.
