Back Of The Chapel ! Looking To Ramp Up The Atmosphere At St Mary's on 10:48 - Oct 12 with 1329 views
Sort of agree here and i've spent my life in various "singing areas", from the archers when it was split, to the milton, under the east, bikeshed, northam and itchen north.
I've always been a firm believer that songs don't make an atmosphere - and singing about the f*cking skates just makes it worse - for me the best atmosphere at the old dell was actually the roar when the players got forward, and the stamping of the feet on the floors of the old upper stands.
Sadly you don't really get that much at many grounds in the country anymore, i can only really think of Goodison and Elland Road where i've heard it in the last few decades.
These days it seems to be more about songs that have no bearing on what's happening in the game, which is probably why some clubs have gone down the fancy dress "ultras" route, as they're the "logical" end point of the social media generation who care more what they look like to each other than actually supporting the team

I remember that England game, we were in seats allocated through the London FA and even they were joining in! That’s unusual. I don’t think it has been quite the same atmosphere wise since we left The Dell - I remember having a conversation with Nick I in the Dell car park when I was down to renew my season ticket for our last season there and to also sign up for SMS and I said to him then that there were going to be about 16.000 ‘new’ supporters in terms of being able to attend games regularly and how it would be our responsibility as the Dell regulars to train them up to our standards as let’s face it nobody relished coming to The Dell. Because the pockets of support were fragmented once inside SMS we never quite got that atmosphere back. We were West Stand Lower (benches originally) our job was to take care of the linesman - one mistake and we were on his back the entire half. Once at SMS that group were scattered far and wide. I remember my favourite ITV commentator Brian Moore saying when he did Keegan’s home debut v Man City the needles on the sound meters were just rammed against the pin on the right hand side in the red zone for most of the game - he said he never heard a noise like it from a crowd of just over 23,000 and when Channon scored the first goal the wall of noise engulfed his commentary position on the gantry like nothing he had previously experienced at a League ground. Hey-ho, what it would be to have times like that again at SMS…
Then I genuinely don’t want you at St Mary’s. You get the team you deserve in life and if your approach is docile you get a docile atmosphere and a docile team. You are contributing to the poor atmosphere at St Mary’s everyone is complaining about at the moment. I’d rather see more empty seats with those remaining raising the decibels and the roof than a ground full of sandwich munchers.

So the 1000’s of supporters who make all the noise and then boo the team are what you want Surely booing the team is worse than sitting watching the game

I agree. They are welcome to sit in the family stand where that sort of atmosphere is encouraged.
But to have a pop at us in BOTC for trying to introduce a home end is bizarre. They literally sit in the cheapest area of the ground (apart from family stand). What do they expect. Prawn sandwiches and half and half scarfs??
Football without what little atmosphere there is would be even more painful.
The Chapel will rise.
Modern football for you I guess.

Singing is not the problem or cheering the team on, it’s the constant swearing in the song I have a issue with Also the singing is not always encouraging the team, as Flynn Downs mentioned

Swearing at the football is inevitable. Apologies if it offends you, but its not going to change. Can I ask why you aren't in the family stand? Very similar view to where you sit now and swearing isn't allowed.
I used to sit there when I was a kid. Great memories.
You mention Flynn Downes - us in BOTC never slate the team. Or boooooooooo.
