9 subs 22:21 - Jun 29 with 5532 viewsdmm

Championship clubs will be able to name nine substitutes from the start of the new English Football League season. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66059634

I can remember when you were allowed just one!

We'll just replace them with ones we substituted earlier.

Surprised we didn't keep Hamaleinen now, could have warmed the bench.

It's an area of expertise of his.

NINE SUBSTITUTES !!!
Eight maids-a-milking
Seven swans-a-swimming
Six-geese-a-laying etc.

Seriously. Why?

My theory is there’s people at UEFA/ FIFA/ EFL/ DWP whoever that need to justify their existence (and wages) and the only way they can do it is by annually tinkering with the small print. Which is why every year we see these pointless changes that ever so slowly erode the identity of the game. Next year: rainbow-coloured crossbars.

This would have been good when we seemed to have 9 goalkeepers.

Insanity. It will be used to slow down play and disjoint games.

9 subs for us will have to include Jude the cat and possibly some fans who win a raffle.

Never knowingly right.

If we go 1-0 up, can we bring on three goalkeepers ?

Are our benches long enough for 9 ? I'm worried that the first two supporters in the second row of the East Paddock are going to be included.

Yes, if you occupy certain seats next season, you would be advised to bring your boots.

They will have to sit outside the stadium as no room inside.

Smells like a trout farm in here

1966 World cup. Didn't a French player come back in one game with his arm in a sling. Luckily he wasn't the goalie😬

Great opportunity for fans to be fully immersed in the match day experience.

I think I’ll email Hoos and bag a spot as a stand in when the Tyler fella makes himself unavailable although, like him, I don’t want any long distance Northern stuff.

Happens in every business. Put people in charge of coming up with new shit and guess what, they're coming up with new shit. The absolute last thing that's going to happen is they say, sorry boss, everything's good right now, nothing at all for us to do here.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Me too. The Matthews final of '53 had an injured Bolton player standing on one leg out on the wing.

This is just the latest nonsense to further the deterioration of a once great game.

Indeed, good point. How often will our 9 man bench have to include a number of Bteam/U18 players?

I think you may be thinking of the 1970 semi final between Italy & West Germany. It may have been Beckenbauer.

There were no subs allowed in the '66 World Cup.

Chelsea and Forest will be OK then.

Finally a method to their collective madness' !!

While I agree that 9 substitutes is ridiculous you're not actually suggesting that the game was better when there were none at all are you?

I think three is enough from 5 on the bench.

5 from 9 gives a very big advantage to teams with large squads, I am thinking of newly relegated teams from the Prem who will in all probability have better players on the bench than we will have on the field.

No.But teams played their first eleven,i.e. their best team.

Two subs max to allow for genuine injuries is more than enough.

What we now have is a first 16 about to become a first 20. This has led to blatant time wasting and cheating and in this respect the game is certainly poorer for it.

And of course the richest benefit the most.

This isn't tinkering though, they've gone the whole nine yards.

Correct, it also allows the bigger teams to rest half their team if they get a good lead. Helps managers who've misjudged their tactics to do a full reshuffle. Encourages players to sit down to get subbed as they may as well be the first of 5.
