Darling effect on Latibeaudie. 13:48 - May 11 with 2323 viewsRichardO

Just asking the question did the inclusion of Darling who I thought filled in quite well at Right Back spur Latibeaudie on to up his game? Competition for places having a positive effect?

Could well have some affect, but also the more he played in that position the better he became.

Imo though neither is the answer for that position.

Quite possible that Darling has spurred on Latibeaudiere as we did see some improvement in his play over the last few games. Darling did ok in his defensive duties but offered as little attacking ability as Latib

But let’s be honest here, neither of them really fit the bill of a modern full back in the current way the game is played. It’s a sad indictment of the state of our squad that the club decided it did not require a quality right back following the success of Christie last season. As a result the vast majority of our attacking play comes down the left hand side making it lot easier to defend.

Darling did a decent job at full back. Yes he lacked a bit going forward but he did make runs. He also gave us a target for a long goal kick, something we have been crying out for. Plus he adds to defensive set plays.

It helps he’s been asked to play as a proper full back and not some hybrid winger/striker/full back.

And has Cullen helping him in front.

Poll: We all dream of a managerial team of Alan Tates?

Innit.

Player in "performing better when not asked to carry out a completely different position" shock.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Ntcham also looks ten times the player now he isn’t playing as a weird wide left sided CAM too.

The only reason we're not in the playoffs is the January transfer window didn't you know?

You forgot to mention Darlings aerial threat at corners and he has been known to take throw ins quickly and forward not letting the opposition regain their defensive shape.
Neither are out and out full backs but they are defenders with help/ cover they are capable of doing the job when playing four at the back.
If the players who we think will go,we will be short of at least four genuine wide players with pace, be it full backs or wingers and will be trying to slot people in to positions again.

Darling appears to be another in the Guvnors bad books.
Don't think he as a centre half looks as bad playing right back as Lats.

Does seem as if you don't follow orders to the letter the naught chair awaits which seems to stifle the proactive free flowing element of the football he purports to strive too.

Both Wood and Darling have been tried in a back 3 whether it be central or out wide on right. Neither Darling or Latib have pace to bomb down the wing while Darling is a basic centre back in a back four where, as soon as RM settled to a back four Wood excelled. Wood is an old fashioned centre half who can bring the ball out as can Darling who is not as stronger in aerial challenges as Wood,

Everyone has struggled on the left left side of the 3 at the back system, Wood, Darling, Cabango, Naughton, Latibeaudie and even Manning why because of the lack of protection on the left hand side afforded by a specialist left footed player, Manning himself comfortable at times but that depended on who was working that side with him from good winning positions at times the left side was compromised by substitutions that stripped that protection away.

The problem was always that three at the back left us wide open to the counter, and a lack of bodies to cover the inevitable mistakes that happen when you play the ball around at the back as much as we do.

Which why the wings needed protection for the wide empty areas of the pitch left bare of cover as the wingbacks push forward to try and enforce our poorly executed high press.
More than happy to play a back 4 until Martin works out what was wrong with his back 3 team setup it wasn't just the poorly used goal kick routine.

Darling effect?
Darling was not capable of playing wide CB. Wood and Cabango pairing has matured meaning Darling isn’t able to get much game time.

Darling effect.
Darling started in the first three games of our unbeaten run until we failed to win against Coventry and Latibeaudie was brought in and has started ever since, so did, not being the teams first choice instead of Darling spur him on to up his game.

None of them were capable of playing the left hand wide CB in a three man defence but when we went on the early season winning run, Manning dropped back more, to effectively play left back, all three Woods, Cabango and Darling played in number of winning games, in those cases Cabango and Darling played as CB while Wood played right back. Naughton played as well alternating with the young inexperienced players. That good run also coincided with Latibeaudie being out injured.
Games Darling started in on the poor run had better results than starting with some other defenders.
Think you will find Darling is more effective in the opposition box than Wood,
I think Woods is better on the floor which is why he would be better fit than Darling as the right back and infinity better than Latibeaudie leaving Darling and Cabango in the middle and Manning on the left.
The reason why Darling isn't in the team may be because he tried to play the game on the front foot and not follow orders, on the naughty chair for him.
We all have our opinions and I would be happy to have any two of the three(Wood, Cabango and Darling) as CB to spread the load of the season in a back four.
