You're still looking at the problem at face value and failing to join the dots. I agree that expenditure on Academy doesn't count towards FFP accounts. However, this argument is too simplistic; you need to look beyond this.
If QPR retains its Championship status, then it will be nigh on impossible to eliminate the deficit simply by cutting wages. Championship players know what they're worth and if QPR won't offer the going rate then their agents will speak to clubs that will. Lower wages will equal inferior players which will result in relegation.
In order to stay within FFP limits the club needs to generate more revenue in order to create headroom. The most realistic way of achieving this is through player sales (a la Eze). It's not going to achieve this objective via the Academy because our Academy is Cat2 and any Cat 1 club can come along and pinch our best young prospects for peanuts.
Ultimately, if the Academy is not producing players that QPR can sell on for big money, then it is pointless. That's why Benham got rid of it at Brentford. | | | |

Not a finance expert at all, so quite interesting reading all of the different takes on the meaning of these figures. The one common theme is that, whatever your perspective, we are absolutely stuffed the season after next and we have to start massive cost-cutting in the summer.

Surely the key point that isn’t always being picked up on here is not so much our impending fire sale, but what is happening in the other Champ clubs.
We can’t be the only ones in this situation as alluded to in the Preston example in Simons article.
If West Brom don’t go up this year they must be in all kinds of trouble and surely the perennials of Reading, Brum etc must be hovering around that precipice too?

Surley in the fullness of time all that is left are top 4/5 with parachute payments, closely followed by Rotherham/Luton/Millwall etc. Everyone else has gone bust or had a points deduction.

In a sense I suppose that is true as with the balance sheet items, principally the training ground, they are putting in a lot more.

Football is becoming totally mental. The egos have certainly taken over the asylum. Sky have single-handedly destroyed the game in this country. Are they really "huge"? Remember, this is a club which was able to spend £100m (yes, really) on a new Training Ground recently. Plus they have impressive plans to expand their stadium too, which should bring in extra revenues.
While I suspect that their recent problems ultimately stem from the fact that their (otherwise hugely wealthy) owners make their money from Duty Free airport shops in the Far East etc, which was completely wiped out during Covid.
Now that they're over that, and assuming Leicester don't actually get relegated this season, they should be able to recover and start competing nearer the top again on a reasonably sound financial basis.
While if they did suddenly find that they needed cash in a hurry, the sale eg of Maddison and Tielemans would probably close that £90m loss at a stroke. [Post edited 8 Mar 2023 17:39]

As far as FFP is concerned, don't think enough is mentioned about the educated guess of £4M per year for allowable costs - could mean we are are in a whole lot more, or less, trouble than we actually think FFP wise - makes not a jot of difference to P & L, Debt or Cashflow of course.

Why would they do that when a) many of them don't make such a muck up of it like we do and b) not all of them have a rich benefactor like we do.
Look at the last few posts about Lootown. They are largely fan owned, do not have Sugar Daddies financially doping them, largely manage their books and sit in the top four. Why on earth would they let cowboy operations such as ours run amock?
We need to face it that these rules are only unfair to our circus, who can't seem to stop spending more than they are allowed. We should be better than we are, so something needs to change. Our current "strategy" (whatever it is) clearly is not working... | |
