Amid the impending doom back home, the rejuvenated England squad will start their first test of this calendar year at 1am (our time, obvs.)

NZ have their injury and selection problems, whilst we seem to have a wealth of players chafing at the leash to show how positive and talented they are. All this, under a captain who may just go down as our GOAT. Typically, he's more interested in bringing out the best in others:

With so much potentially great cricket ahead of us this year, thought i'd make it a thread for the entirety rather than different series. Bring it on!

Sadly what was leading up to be a fantastic series has been overtaken by the tragic events In NZ. Let's hope the series can bring a little bit of 'sunshine' for our kiwi friends.

I cannot see the Blackcaps winning a game to be honest. A team in transition, likely to be 3 debut players. Good news is that the game likely to go ahead, pitch already dried out, and a decent weather forecast.

Thanks for the local update

Will you make it to either of the tests?

Unfortunately, no. The South Island misses out, as happens with many events. Just seen that Inspiral Carpets are touring, a band i have listened to often, but not seen, but they also decide that beautiful Christchurch is not worth a visit. Hard to believe, as there a many ex-pats based here.

Crawley gone. 18-1.

England 134-2 at tea, thanks to an excellent 84 by Ben Duckett.

Radio commentary on Talk S**t 2 is Ifoller standard compared the quality of Test Match Special.

This is a 20 minute tea not a 40 minute lunch which comes later. Mental.

Mental's about right!

Just waking up to find we've declared on 325-9 after scoring at well over 5 an over. Can't recall anyone not batting through at this point in a game before, but gives us an hour or so to get into NZ and push the game on

Well, the plan seems to have worked so far. 3 down and another chance at them in the morning. Get a couple early doors and we'll be laughing.

One good thing about Bazball is it reduces chances of a draw; the opposition knows that can't just hang in there as we'll have plenty of time to bowl them out. You either outscore us or you lose.

He did well to last 14 balls the way he played in that first innings.

Great decision to declare, even psychologically it threw NZ immediately on the back foot and gave Jimmy time to prepare rather than wasting 15 minutes at the crease for the sake of 2 or 3 runs.

I love Bazball.

Tangled up in blue.

At 58.2 overs, apparently the second earliest first innings declaration in test history, after the forfeiture of our first innings (which counted as a declaration) in the infamous Hansie Cronje test in 2000

Records seem to tumble with every game

Edit: the earliest declaration (not forfeiture) has been reported as Pakistan's 130-9 after 44.5 overs in 1974, in a rain-affected Lord's test

For a fleeting second of joy, I initially thought good, that's one of the relegation spots filled!

Great innings by Blundell, and good to see NZ putting up a real fight, as one might expect

We need the cricket to be competitive. Now let's see how England go, the roles reversed under the floodlights

There are not many finer things to see in English cricket than Stuart Broad being ‘on it’

Indeed, and the Broad/Anderson partnership now the highest wicket-takers, overtaking Warne/McGrath. That's some feat

NZ 72/8

One wicket for Jack, 2 in 2 balls for Jimmy. Didn't get the hat trick.

England win a test in NZ for the first time since 2008 with more than a day to spare!

All out for 126, England beat New Zealand by 267 runs.

Something to cheer about after yesterday's horrors.

Yes just about the perfect test by England.

What can be achieved by committed players and strong leadership all buying into to a meaningful game plan. Team England!

Alongside the Anderson/Broad partnership record, there's Stokes breaking McCullum's six-hitting record in tests, and Stokes equalling the least number of tests to reach 10 wins as captain (12)

So just three records during this test, England must be losing momentum

Archer & Wood waiting in case any of our bowlers need a rest, and YJB will ensure our batters keep on battering

Less than 30 wickets from overtaking Warne as number 2 wicket taker of all time. Amazing as the wear & tear on the body is so much more than a spinner

If we win the ashes I wonder if that will prompt retirement, especially if he overtakes Warne at that time

I wondered about that too, perhaps Anderson & Broad together, just as Warne & McGrath did after the 2007 Ashes downunder

Decent morning for England, 101-3 after losing early wickets, put in on a green surface

Brook with another 50 already, and good to see Root digging in to wait for improving conditions

Expect the weather to influence this game. Just got drenched, and the weather front is heading towards Wellington.

Tea 237 for 3.

Having been put in on a "green top" by NZ, the 1st day 2nd session has been incredible by Root and Brook. Root has been solid, Brook has been magnificent. Should he keep up to this very high level, the convicts will have to develop new dirty tricks to keep the Ashes this Summer. He's been that good. Steve "sandpaper" Smith my arse.

Of course, we have to bowl and NZ have to bat on this track, but apart from the predictable early glitches, it's looking good.
