Remember those days. I think Ray Wilkins did a bit. Will we ever see such a thing again?

Was quite the fad at one time.

There is a Brian Laws episode on Undr The Cosh where he talks about it.

Andy Hessenthaler for Gillingham springs to mind. Never failed to pick himself.

Ronaldo tried playing and managing Portugal at the WC.

Until the actual manager stepped in.

Possibly only at the lower tiers of the EFL, where it seems the best British younger coaches and managers seem to spring up from, rather than the so called Premier League stars, who just don't either have the ability or motivation to succeed in coaching and management.

The 70s and 80s seemed to be the halcyon days of the player manager.
Terry Neill at Hull City (and N. Ireland for a spell)
Dave Mackay at Swindon
Johnny Giles at West Brom
Allan Clarke at Barnsley
John Toshack at Swansea
Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool
Graeme Souness at Rangers

Come the 90s they were still about but fewer. Reid at Man City, Hoddle at Swindon, Robson at Middlesbrough, Strachan at Coventry, Curbishley and Gritt at Charlton, Gullit and Vialli for the other team in Fulham.

Roy Race did it for years. Even did it when he briefly moved to Walford after the DoF forced him to play crap youngsters in Melchester's first team.

I suppose it is the extreme example of 'show us your medals'; the manager is literally there on the pitch leading the troops. These days so many managers and coaches haven't even played the game at the highest level that it's become increasingly irrelevant - the Villas-Boas principle.

Bryan Robson at Middlesboro (He got them promoted)

"Robson played his final game as a player on 1 January 1997, in a Premier League game against Arsenal at Highbury 10 days before his 40th birthday. He claimed in his autobiography that he knew it was the right time to retire as his whole body ached for two weeks afterwards trying to keep up with the livewires Dennis Bergkamp and Ian Wright. "

The first one ever to do it in the top flight I believe.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean we're not all against you.

I recall a game my Commodore Amiga called Player Manager. You bought the players, like Championship Manager, but then played in the team on match day through Kick Off 2.
You may have to be a certain age to appreciate how ground breaking it was!

I suspect rule changes are making them a rare beast now. I think you need to have a number of UEFA qualifications to coach a professional team and even more for a top tier team. They all take time and work to get. Player availability to do that while still playing comes second to swanning around Dubai or wherever.

Dino Dini was a genius.

Think it was the Kick off 1 engine for Player Manager and would have loved a version withe the newer engine.

Since I was gash at the attacking elements of the game id play as a sweeper. Sweep up and just lump the ball up front like a Wimbledon.

Buying players with uber pace and no stamina to come on as subs last knockings to kill the opposition.

Other than that I dont remember it at all. :D
