The idea that a millionaire is going to just dump a couple of million a year into a football club forever is hugely fanciful. Elton John didn't actually put a penny into Watford, he simply guaranteed a £1m loan from the bank, but then a million in those days was a huge number. Building a sustainable club is a hugely difficult undertaking with the vagaries of good and bad seasons and which clubs you play during the season and your capacity to sell a player at a good profit. Sunderland at home is great financially, Southend not so much. If a division becomes dominated by local clubs, happy days for some but not others if their crowds are smaller as a result of travelling distances. There is a strong argument for a return regional divisions per the old Div3 N&S. | |
