Because I don’t think that was ever on the cards. It’s just crazy to think.
Sousa played drab football, the players didn’t like him and we finished 8th (from memory). Cooper just equalled our record points tally for this division and appears to have the support of all the players, many of whom seem to come here simply due to the fact he is here - it’s not comparable.
What appears to be happening now is Cooper wants to be paid for what he is delivering now that he is approaching only a year left of his contract after two incredibly successful seasons and he isn’t getting the money he wants, maybe it’s a financial issue within the club.
More akin to the Gylfi situation. We wanted £50m, Everton wouldn’t pay it, Gylfi downed tools and forced the transfer, we ended up having to accept £35m. Except Everton (or Palace in this case) moved on as it’s close to the season starting.
Far more likely than the club wanting to get rid of a manager for no apparent reason, that they pay £3k a week to who achieves so much with the minimal investment he gets. Improving year on year. It’s not logical.
This has all the hallmarks of a financially driven breakdown of relationship. Nothing else makes sense, we just got to within 90mins of the Premier League for crying out loud. [Post edited 21 Jul 2021 12:45]

It’s completely comparable. Sousa played a stifling, defensive game, out of necessity as that was where the squad was strongest. Playing style was far closer to Coopers than any other manager we have had in the Championship.
Paying off someone on £180k a year (if that’s true) is not comparable to having to sell someone for £35m. It may not have been the £50m we wanted, but that £35m was massive money to the club. You don’t pay someone off unless you don’t want them around.
Again, re. your last sentence, that would have been entirely predictable if we’d asked for a compensation figure that drove Palace away. Winter would have been aware that was very likely to happen. Of course, if Palace just didn’t want him, there’s not a lot Winter could have done. | | | |

It’s not comparable.
One achieved progression year on year, each year making the playoffs against the odds, the other...
didn’t. As a club we have continued on an upward trend with Cooper and results will always be more appealing than how they are achieved from an ownership point of view - Sousa didn’t deliver either. Also a reason Monk wasn’t sacked after our 8th place finish.
Results come first.
The Gylfi thing is completely comparable, the numbers may not be the same but the principle is. Reluctantly parting ways due to an untenable position doesn’t mean we wanted to get rid of the player/manager. We didn’t want Gylfi to leave clearly, once he made his position untenable, we had to do what was best for the club even if it meant taking a hit financially on what we thought he was worth or could have got.
If Cooper has made it clear that unless his demands are met then he will put minimal effort in then there comes a cross roads which needs to be resolved. Hence why this for me was always going to end up in a new contract or a parting of the ways, I was heavily favouring the former but maybe the latter is now more realistic.
What’s utterly unrealistic however is that the club wanted rid of a manager who just equalled our record that they pay 3k a week to because some fans want a few more passes. It’s beyond ridiculous, and extremely silly. [Post edited 21 Jul 2021 13:16]

Of course it is, I’m not claiming to know anything at all. It’s a mystery to us all.
But what you can do is put yourself in the position of the decision makes and think logically about the situation given what we do know, or know is most likely.
The notion the club wanted rid of him prior to the Palace interest is just ridiculous really, given what we achieved the season just gone (and the one before that). Unless this wrangle over a contract has been going on for longer than we give credit for.
As an owner of what is essentially a sports business, you want someone in charge that gives you the best possible returns for the investment you put in. It’s the same in most (if not all) businesses. There is not a single logical thread that leads to the club being unhappy with what he has delivered on that front.
If there is unhappiness in the back room; then it’s likely to be far deeper than that. As most things in football, most things stem from money. We believe Cooper is one of the lowest paid managers in the league despite being one of the most successful, this is logically going to be a bone of contention, especially after 2 successful years.

Sousa was only there for a season, he had more points and a higher finish than Martinez. Yes, the football was boring, but if we’re purely judging on ‘results come first’ (which to owners they invariably do), that’s progress.
We only ‘had’ to get rid of Gylfi because there was a record breaking transfer in it for us. Yes, if he’d committed to us we may have foregone that, but it’s disingenuous to be imply the only reason we sold him was because he stamped his feet. If he’d downed tools but Everton only offered £5m or £10m, I’m sure we’d have made him honour his contract.
Cooper wouldn’t be stupid enough to do that. He’s got a year left until he’s a free agent. He’s not a top level manager who can burn bridges and walk into another job. Reputationally, it would be career suicide. | | | |

Absolutely.
But he has smashed realistic expectations every year.
To think any negative outcome decision that may be made regarding his future will be performance related, is naive in the extreme.
That’s the part that makes no logical sense for anyone willing to look at it without bias.
Any parting of the ways will be due to other factors. Financial being the most likely but could well be a multitude of things. It’s clear he didn’t appreciate what he was given in January and made no bones about making that known. | |

We didn’t sack Sousa, Sousa was poached.
I don’t believe we would have sacked him either unless results significantly downturned, which appeared likely given the way the players disliked him. We progressed in terms of a single league position (8th to 7th) and a single point (68 to 69), but in reality that was hardly significant progression.
Coopers first season we went from 10th to 6th (65 points to 70), his second we went from 6th to 4th (70 points to 80). Thats real tangible progression.
We made it clear that we were not going to sell Gylfi unless we got £50m. It’s not disingenuous in the slightest to believe we didn’t want to sell and would have if he didn’t refuse to go on tour and force the move. I fully believe we would have stood firm, which is why it took to the end of the window to sort it, I don’t think we had any desire to sell for the amount we did.
Cooper is a professional, I’m sure he wouldn’t down tools. But he may threaten it in order to work a deal for him that is in keeping with what he deserves, this is what happens in football. Would Gylfi have continued to refuse to play? Probably not. But the fact he threatened it made his position within the side rather untenable.
Is this what had happened with Cooper? Who knows. But what’s clearly illogical is to suggest the club want to part ways with him due to league performance, which has clearly been outstripping expectation every year. | |

My mind is always open, but will always gravitate to the most likely scenario.
Being in the same league as when he was appointed is irrelevant. Nobody worth their salt thinks like that.
The only manager we have appointed at this level in the best part of half a century who has been hired and taken us to a higher division is Brendan Rodgers.
He will not be the benchmark, and if he is then we have far deeper problems than anyone suspects and we should expect a manager severance pay every single year from here on in. [Post edited 21 Jul 2021 13:43]
