Just finished reading Stephen Morris’s (New Order drummer) second book. It goes into some detail on recording and working with the England squad.
Morris didn’t want to do a football song but he was outvoted, and the rest as they say is history.
The footballers had their own rider, crates and crates of champagne, and guzzled it like the professionals they were. Morris, known for a few excesses himself, was staggered at their capacity to drink.
One of my guilty pleasures is Del Amitri and I really like their 1998 Scottish World Cup Song, it's wonderfully down beat. The title is "Don't come back too soon" and the killer line is "If I have a dream at all it's that for once you won't be on that stupid plane." The first thing you see on the official video is a sign saying "Way Out"
You can feel in that "for once" the ground-in effect of years of turning on the news and seeing the team sheepishly coming down the steps at Prestwick airport after yet another early departure, it's like us and the FA Cup 3rd round.
