A much maligned beer brand with its Party 7 tin being very popular at house parties as well as Bradford V Saints in 1976 , it seems Watneys is back as a brand

The word 'tin' for a Party 7 can doesn't do it justice. I remember one poor Forest fan being seriously laid about with one under the by pass at Wembley Central before the 1979 final.

It was all a bit 'wild west' on the approach to the ground, so much so that my skate mate (who'd somehow blagged a ticket for the game) promptly bought a Saints scarf to wear as he felt safer...

Poll: Which manager would you prefer Saints to have?

It was wasn’t it! Those were the days of light and bitter. Wouldn’t touch the stuff now!

Did anyone ever open a party seven without it going everywhere?

Wasn’t there a party 4 too for us younger drinkers going to parties

Yep party 4 or party 7 you used to have to open them with a can opener

And then go home from the mate's party and throw up as a 15 year old

I’m very proud to have worked at the old Watneys brewery in mortlake until its closure a few years back. I wonder if they’ll bring stingo back as well?

You needed to make two holes to make it work.

Awful beer.
CAMRA was formed in reaction to the rubbish the breweries were churning out.

All I remember is it was a pint of Red Barrel and 10 Players no.6 on a Friday night when just paid and half a pint of Starlight and 10 no.10 by the following Thursday.

The standard joke many years ago was why was making love in a punt like drinking Watneys Red Barrel? Because it was the nearest thing to f*cking water.

If you drank in the Willow in Winchester back in the 70s, you ordered a pint of 'Itchen' as the river ran beneath the pub.

The first 'real ale' I remember in Winchester was Gale's HSB which was sold in the Theatre Bar on Jewry Street, circa 1976-7 ish.

Never been a bitter drinker, although I do remember the odd pint of Starlight as an underage drinker back in 1977, but real ale never agreed with me

Yep, and you had to be pretty damn quick to get the 2nd hole made!! It seemed every party I went to where a Party 7 was involved in, nobody had a can opener, but bizarrely a hammer and screw driver/hole punch always seemed to be at hand. Once the top of the can was punctured, the contents would spurt out of the small hole like a geyser until the 2nd hole was made. Most kitchen ceilings in the 70's bore the tell tale splash of shame !! Probably a blessing as it was a truly naff pint.
