Good luck to anyone else going through this today. Fortunately my youngest has got what she needs for exile to Chilly Jocko-Land (c. J. Greaves).

Private schools results boosted by 4.7% and state schools downgraded.

They could have easily ensured nobody got bumped down more than one grade. Can’t honestly work out if this is incompetence or a cruel government being cruel because it can.

University of Life brigade loving it on the Twitter.

Nephew was downgraded from 3 A* to 3 A had taken step for maths as well with a high pass. Lost Cambridge and UCL places was offered a place at Bristol, email directly by university with offer accepted it this morning thus closing off any other offers, received rejection via UCAS at 5pm for place that had been confirmed. Now without anything.

Highest attaining student at a pretty poor school, self taught himself further maths as no teacher to do it.

Of course no student at school had ever attained A* at maths at this school impossible with this algorithm to have achieved it.

Its an absolute shit show

Don't know how to link tweets, but have a look at the BBC's Faisal Islam on Twitter.

Keen to see what happens next week with GCSE results. With a minimum C required in English and Maths for every job or college place, if a similar algorithm is applied there will be LOTS of unhappy 16-year-olds next week.

Shamelessly nicked from Twitter but ABBA were disappointed to learn that they're now DFEC.

To have a system that didn’t take into account teachers predicted grades and mock results is frankly nothing short of criminal, and using an algorithm that takes into account your school location and status underlines this government’s attitude to working class.
My kids are older and thankfully we haven’t had to go through this but I feel so sorry for the kids and families who are experiencing this.
Williamson has a lot to answer for, but as usual I suspect he’ll wriggle out of it and find a way of blaming someone else.
Meanwhile the Tories refuse to suspend the MP who is under criminal investigation for rape and he will be allowed to return to the Commons to work...

My daughter is waiting for her GCSE results this week. I'm fearful of the outcome having seen what has happened with the A level results last week and the articles suggesting that the GCSE results are going to be based on school performance and peer ranking.

Fingers crossed she gets what she needs for 6th form college.

Upvoting this post seems wrong so just wanted to sympathise.

Can't work out what the hell's happened with that UCAS thing, doesn't sound intentional - surely anyone with three A's ought to be good for a decent uni whatever you might think of the downgrade from A*

Sounds a bit like the UCAS system is crashing under the strain. Which would be bloody typical.

Fingers crossed.
As you say they used the same/similar prediction system so I fear it’ll be carnage.

I totally agree, my children are well passed the period when they took exams, but can remember the anxious wait 9 years ago, when our youngest was waiting for her A level results and gaining a place at University.
The mockery of how this year's exam results are being assessed and the stress this is causing to students and parents is unfair. The obsession with school league tables and trying to apply a methodolgy to reflect the Schools performance over the last 3 years is wrong. It has been difficult enough with the stress of the Covid crisis for these youngsters at a very important time of their educational life. The Scots government have relented after it went wrong and gone back to teachers assessments, the English results should be done the same way. They have 4 days until the GCSE results to rectify this, otherwise more heartache that could at least be softened, by removing the computer says no methodology.

I've just been chatting with a neighbour who's a head of dept at a school which consistently produces amongst the best exam results in Bristol. He reckons 25% of his students have been unfairly downgraded by at least one grade, with more than half of those having been downgraded by at least two grades. He's absolutely gutted for those kids. I know the government have been operating in incredibly difficult times, but this is such a huge injustice that it surely can't be allowed to stand.

Has he been in touch with Bristol since?
Showing Maths places in clearing with A*AA, or AAB under a "contextual offer". Sounds like he could qualify.

The uni year has also been put back a month or so, with the first lot of offers out on the 11th Sept I think. There is a precedent with the uni year being delayed, as the same thing happened in 1981, due to a strike delaying LC results. Ironic because this was the year I did my LC, who would have imagined my daughter would have a similar fate 39 years later?

Remarkable.

My son is due back at school, 8.30am, Wednesday September 2nd, with no social distancing, no masks allowed and the kids cleaning their own desks before moving between classrooms.

Fully expecting in-school teaching to then be over for the term somewhere around 4pm, Wednesday September 2nd, with the only outstanding question whether he'll have already caught Covid.

Head of UCAS now saying - yes but we have already given out our offers. They are going to have to wheelbarrow cash to universities to increase places but lots of practical problems like accommodation shortages if they do that

They can't guarantee places to everyone - they over offer to compensate for students missing grades. It's simply untenable.
