Andrei Kanchelskis - even if he was a tad over weight and well past his best for us :-)

Interesting coincidence: those two great footballers, Edgar Chadwick and Ronald Koeman, both managed the Dutch national team. But, Chadwick did actually play for Saints & Everton.

Jimmy Gabriel was a really good player who would have easily made the transition to the current level of football.

Yes, he was. He was in Everton's league championship winning team in 1963. and their FA Cup winning team in 1966. The only reason they let him go was to make way for their expensive new signing Howard Kendall, who alongside Alan Ball and Colin Harvey, was at the heart of the Everton team that won the league again in 1970.

Gabriel was a very good left half for us, playing next to big John McGrath at centre half. I particularly remember them as a formidable defensive pair in the Saints team which finished 7th in 1969 and 1971 and qualified for Europe. Perhaps because of the age I was then, that remains one of my all-time favourite Saints teams.
