15 years ago, or thereabouts, I can remember going to an away game at Nottingham Forest, and going for a pre-match drink at a pub in the shadow of Trent Bridge cricket ground. The pub was rammed with Swans fans, many of them disorderly. The staff had to phone the police after they were over-run, with some of our finest stealing drinks from behind the bar, and setting several tiny St. George flags on fire.
I didn't conclude from this that the other 2000 Swans fans at the game were scum.

The scum are the ones committing criminal acts and trying to incite violence. I never suggested they were all scum and never would. It’s a fact we have these unwashed anarchist types turning up at every protest because they want to cause trouble and have a bit of a ruck, and it detracts from the peaceful protesters although I am quite incandescent with rage that the lockdown of the last three months has been essentially made null and void. Why has the lockdown been made null and void?
The virus is not at the same stage as it was in March, April and May.
It remains to be seen whether it’s at a low enough level in the community to prevent the mass demonstrations causing a real issue. Let’s hope so. If there isn’t a spike in 3 weeks then we can safely say the worst has gone foe now at least, and we then have to wait to see if Autumn brings another surge, or whether it will disappear as the other corona virus outbreaks have done (neither SARS nor MERS had another wave as far as I know), or whether there is a vaccine by then.

Well the same could be asked about why we can’t go to pubs and yet people have been allowed to go to the beach for over a month and are allowed to meet in each other’s gardens.
Because the risk is, I assume, different.
I would imagine sitting in a pub garden has a very different risk to inside or sitting in a restaurant inside. The countries which have seen a bit of a spike have done so as a result of gatherings inside.
Sitting at a football match for almost two hours surrounded by the same cluster of people without moving around is different I imagine to walking around streets, however crowded. The length of time you spend with an infected person seems crucial, hence the tracing being done only if someone has spent 15 minutes in the company of someone who is infected. I imagine that in a demonstration that’s constantly moving, people walking, etc, people probably don’t spend 15 minutes within 2 metres of very many people, if anyone other than their own little group.
I wouldn’t attend a demonstration at the moment, I’d assess the risk for me as too high, but I only base that on my assessment. We will find out in two or three weeks whether it has caused an issue, and hopefully it hasn’t. | | | |

It doesn’t matter how long you spend with someone. It’s whether you come in to contact with the droplets of an infected person. People shout and sing at these marches. There’s going to be saliva and phlegm flying all over the place. If people can go to demonstrations where the risk is high why can’t we go to pubs and football matches? | |

Because the government can shut pubs and stop football matches. They can’t stop thousands of people playing god with other people’s lives by attending protests, packing onto beaches because it’s sunny or having street parties because it’s VE Day and they haven’t been out for a while.

A month ago when I was deeply concerned about the street parties for VE Day and said they should have been put on hold as I feared a second spike, you argued against me because people may not live to see the next opportunity to mark the occasion.
Despite that night seeing fights, A&E admissions up all over the place, people doing congas, huge gatherings in the streets as people got drunk and careless, there was no spike. And we’re now a month further on.
Perhaps the droplets generated from singing God Save The Queen and We’ll Meet Again are different from those generated by chanting Black Lives Matter? Who knows.
As I said, I wouldn’t attend a march, but you can’t stop them any more than you can stop middle aged white people crush up in Bournemouth Beach. We can just hope that it’s fine. | | | |

Fairly sure none of those rule changes include permission to gather as closely as you want as long as you're protesting.
Cummings deserves stick for doing what he did, perhaps moreso given his position. But HJ is quite correct in saying that there's no doubt whatsoever that many of the people who would have been apopleptic about Cummings breaking the rules will be doing so now and not seeing the contradiction. | |
