Swansea City to furlough non-playing staff ... 16:43 - Apr 1 with 5953 viewstheloneranger

"The move allows up to 80% of wages to be covered during football's suspension."

"Swansea say they will top up the remaining 20% so staff retain their full wages "for the immediate future".

Once other clubs took this step (and the majority of the negative media attention), it was inevitable we'd do the same.

I sincerely hope the PFA are working on a proposal that sees players take wage cuts to protect non-playing staff at all clubs. It's got to be done right with the express understanding that the money is used to protect staff, not saved for transfers or expensive wages in the future.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

Why don’t all clubs furlough all the players, money capped at 80% of £2500

I think most supporters of most clubs ( especially PL) will be looking at the players of the team they support to come up with some sort of personal financial sacrifice.

Not a pay cut, but giving over a percentage of thier wages to the less fortunate at this time.

If every player in the Premier league for instance gave over just 10% of thier wages for the next few months it could make a vital contribution to families struggling to put food on the table at the moment.

You might think I've forgotten, but one day, when you least expect it, my time will come.

Because technically they would be putting all the players out of contract. Chaos!

If you did that, then after 4 weeks each player could ask to be made redundant and possibly just walk away from the club.

Agree totally but I bet the majority of them don’t give a fuk.

The government should force each person in the UK who earns over 100k to pay 10% into a fund (NHS or key workers to be exceptions).

Surely our rich wealthy owners could cover this, after all even though nobody could foresee this pandemic it was the main reason for the sale wasn’t it!
Well wasn’t it? So they’d be able to cover costs if things ever went shit shaped.
That’s what the sellouts said didn’t they?

For 'normal' employees, furloughing someone doesn't break continuance service conditions. Are footballers different? They shouldn't be imo. Some clubs down the lower end of the pyramid may need to use furloughing to survive (same as any other business).

Yes footballers are different as they are under contract. By furloughing them their clubs are saying that they can no longer honour that contract. It would be an absolute nightmare for clubs from top to bottom.

Depends whether clubs can still hold a player's registration despite putting them on furlough. That's the piece of paper tying them to a club/employer, not the employment contract.

After 4 week of being furloughed you can ask to be made redundant and that includes players too.

Our owners should step in and help those who genuinely need it at the club - ie the non-playing staff.

No it doesn’t. It’s pointless furloughing players that earn thousands each week.
Also they are under contract and therefore have the right to get paid what they are entitled too.

Totally different contracts.
The normal employee can walk away with (I guess ) following a month's notice.
Players cannot change jobs for years unless they ask for a transfer or are transferred.
I don't claim to know the intricacies of players' contracts but assume they can only be changed by mutual agreement. Who in their right mind is going to agree to such massive pay cuts even in this climate ?
