Opposition Report: Ipswich Town

A Brief Look At The Tractor Boys

Ipswich Town visit Bloomfield Road on Saturday, looking to cement a place in the top six come the end of the season.

Paul Lambert’s side, who were one of the clear favourites for promotion at the start of the season, have gone off the boil lately picking up just one victory in their last six league games. The Tractor Boys sit in ninth position coming into the fixture, three points outside of the play-off places.

Ipswich’s away form has been the stumbling block of late, having picked up just one league win on the road since the start of November.

The striking partnership of Kayden Jackson and James Norwood have proved costly to many opposition teams so far this season however, with the duo scoring 22 goals between them to date. Jackson, signed from Accrington Stanley in the summer of 2018, also has seven assists to his name.

An entertaining 2-2 draw at Portman Road back in November saw Blackpool and Ipswich settle for a point apiece. Ipswich led though Gwion Edwards early goal, before Joe Nuttall and Jay Spearing got the goals for the Seasiders, with Luke Garbutt firing home a penalty to rescue a point for the hosts.

Last Three Results:

22/2/20 — Ipswich Town 0-1 Oxford United

15/2/20 — Ipswich Town 4-1 Burton Albion

11/2/20 — AFC Wimbledon 0-0 Ipswich Town

The Manager: Paul Lambert

Paul Lambert joined Ipswich in October 2018, becoming the first ever manager to manage both Norwich City and Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys were in a real relegation dogfight in the Championship when Lambert joined, with the Club eventually suffering relegation to League One, with just five league wins to their name all season.

Lambert has had previous in getting promotion out of League One before, taking arch rivals Norwich from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons back in 2010 and 2011.

As well as the two East Anglian club’s Lambert has managed the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers. He has also played for the likes of Celtic and Borussia Dortmund, winning the 1997 Champions League during his time in Germany.

The Star Man: Flynn Downes

21-year-old Flynn Downes is a product of the Ipswich Town Academy, and has become an integral part of Paul Lambert’s squad. The midfielder played 30 times for Ipswich last season in the Championship, and is now one of the first names on the team sheet this season. Downes has scored two goals from midfield this season against both Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers.

Prediction

Blackpool eased any potential relegation fears on Tuesday by beating rivals Bolton in stoppage-time to move 15 points clear of the bottom-three. Eight of the Seasiders' 10 League One victories this term have come at Bloomfield Road and they'll be looking to build off the impressive point they collected at Portman Road when the sides met back in November.

Ipswich arrive in Lancashire in wretched form and have gone from League One leaders to top-six hopefuls after winning just four of their previous 18 league matches. With automatic promotion currently looking a step too far for Tractor Boys, it's all about ensuring that they finish inside those playoff places.

Prediction: Blackpool 1 - 2 Ipswich

I'll give Dunn this, no way would Larry have said that in a pre match interview.

Heneghan is not available. He still has one match of his three match suspension to serve. Should be ok for Fleetwood next week!

Sometime between mid March and Easter IIRC.

Yeah, need Heneghan back for Fleetwood, we're very short of players (and height) in defence at the moment.

Top goalscorer Armand Gnanduillet ruled out of Blackpool's clash against Ipswich Town through injury

Caretaker boss David Dunn has ruled Armand Gnanduillet out of Blackpool's clash against Ipswich Town tomorrow because of injury.

The Frenchman has missed Blackpool's last two games with a hamstring strain he suffered in the recent defeat to Bristol Rovers.

While the 28-year-old has returned to training this week, Dunn says he's not willing to risk his star striker picking up another knock.

“Armand is back running, he’s back on the grass", the caretaker boss said.

“He’s coming along nicely but what we can’t afford to do is risk him, because we want him for the rest of the season and not just one game.”

The Seasiders have no fresh injury concerns, with Jak Alnwick (arm) and Sullay Kaikai (groin/abductor) the only other absentees through injury.

Dunn's charges have had to train at Blackpool and Fylde College this week in preparation for tomorrow's game against Ipswich due to the weather rendering Squires Gate unplayable.

“The lads are fine and training has been really sharp," Dunn added.

“It’s tough to get on the training ground at the minute because of how much rain we’ve had.

“But luckily we’re in a good community here and we’ve got a lot of people that want to help and want the club to do well.

“The local college has been excellent in terms of letting us use their facilities, so we’ve made the best of a bad situation.

“The surface at the college is excellent so we’re really thankful to them as well.”

Ipswich will also be without their leading two goalscorers tomorrow, with Kayden Jackson suspended and James Norwood out through injury.

The Tractor Boys have slipped down to ninth in the League One table following a run of four defeats in six.
