Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus 14:35 - Dec 27 with 13497 views | westside | What a horrible looking place when you drive past it. There was a big grass open space square in the middle where you could see the other buildings around like the hall and tower but they have just stuck an awful looking building on it. New campus opportunity ruined by awful design and planning. [Post edited 27 Dec 2019 14:36]

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 15:27 - Dec 27 with 7303 views | Kilkennyjack | On the other hand ..... fantastic to see that huge investment in the future prosperity of the area. More students living and studying in Swansea brings many positives. The uni even sponsors the Swans of course - both kit and ground advertising. The better the uni does then the better shirley....? On the other hand, we could complain about the design ...? And I am pretty sure that planning will have had a good look at things. God bless the EU for funding it all.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 16:17 - Dec 27 with 7214 views | monmouth | I d be gutted if I came down and saw the real university on the prom and ended up at that horror show on Fabian Way. Every day would be a reminder of ‘look at what you could have won’.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:06 - Dec 27 with 7118 views | exhmrc1 | Whilst I prefer the old university campus the new campus is very well received by students parents and others. I know someone who advises students in North London and came down in September unannounced to look around the new Bay Campus and was very impressed. He didnt have time to look at Singleton to compare as was visiting West Wales on holiday and called to view. An Indian couple came over with their son in September who is now studying there. Again they went home inpressed with the Bay campus. [Post edited 27 Dec 2019 17:10]

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:24 - Dec 27 with 7058 views | monmouth | Most universities are dependent on overseas students now. It will undoubtedly end in tears. I know one university at least needed baling out. I’d be astonished if quite a few don’t go to the wall over the next 5 years, one way or another.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:25 - Dec 27 with 7050 views | howenjack | You mean the good old British taxpayers for funding it all.
Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:29 - Dec 27 with 7042 views | Joe_bradshaw | Swansea have carefully nurtured the Chinese government and developed partnerships with Chinese universities and companies. Obviously if there is a change of heart in China that would be a problem. One of the companies with direct links to the university is GWFX which led to them becoming shirt sponsors of the Swans a few years ago.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:33 - Dec 27 with 7026 views | Kilkennyjack | If you have a world class business then people will want to come. Far more sustainable than solely focusing on UK based students. Limited number there and other uni’s would be competing. No - a global model is far more flexible with the potential for future growth. Of course they need to be run as a business, but Swansea can grow further. God bless the EU.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:36 - Dec 27 with 7011 views | Kilkennyjack | No. The British govt did not flow money into south Wales. Thats how we became so poor that we qualified for EU hand outs. Left to the British govt then there would be no Swansea Uni Bay Campus. Fact.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:48 - Dec 27 with 6986 views | howenjack | You're missing the fact that the coffers used by the EU are provided by the British taxpayers .We're probably paying for roads in Bulgaria and other projects in far flung European enclaves as well.
Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 17:55 - Dec 27 with 6970 views | longlostjack | I’d imagine a lot depends on the academic reputation of the University. In that respect Swansea Uni should be in a better position than many.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 18:09 - Dec 27 with 6937 views | Kilkennyjack | You’re missing the point that our own government has left our nation so poor that we qualify for EU structural funding. Thats the story here. Westmonster does not work for Wales.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 18:15 - Dec 27 with 6920 views | monmouth | Of course, but that's not really the point I'm making. We will have a lot of competition in the medium term for these students post brexit, and I can tell without any doubt that 'world class' does not apply to the majority of our universities in general, Swansea included. It may apply to certain faculties. An increasing number of big employers, growing every year, are losing faith to the extent that they now target sixth formers directly as they believe they can do a better job of educating people themselves and they simply don't believe in the qualifications as a differentiator. People get 2:1s now that would not have got a 3rd in the 70s. I know, because I've battled in vain against the dumbing down. Chinese students already know they need a Masters to even compete, and are looking to the US and Europe, and UK students are realising that a degree gains them next to nothing as a step up in many cases. And I disagree they should be businesses, they should be educators. It is the 'bums on seats' approach and the 'growth' that will kill the golden goose. 25 years time? Just Oxbridge, Durham, LSE and a dozen others at most I would bet on being surviving universities as we think of them today, if I was a betting man. The rest will have to position themselves entirely differently, building small specialisms, to survive. Will Swansea make it? Yes, I would bet it would survive but the expansion (that is common to many institutions as they battle for a pool of students that has probably near peaked) will not and that Bay campus will become like Cardiff's expanded ground. A totem to false promise. That said, they had little choice but to build it given the prevailing conditions. It was impossible to resist, especially for people that will never have to deal with the longer term consequences. Obviously I hope for Swansea's sake, and the many young researchers and teachers that I work with (that are already eyeing universities outside the UK, not surprisingly really) that I am being way too pessimistic, and maybe so.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 18:26 - Dec 27 with 6882 views | Joe_bradshaw | Irrelevant to the academic reputation which has continued to rise.

Swanseaa Uni Bay Campus on 18:44 - Dec 27 with 6846 views | longlostjack | Top post. The bums on seats approach will definitely kill the golden goose. English language requirements for foreign students should be rigorously applied for example.
