Having watched Ralph’s full interview on amazon prime I have to admit I am back on side with Ralph. Firstly I can see he is starting to realise different strokes for different folks (teams). He admitted Long was right choice for Norwich game. Also he put Romeu and Yosh on as experienced players during a period when Norwich were putting pressure on defence. This made a difference. It is also clear from his interview he acknowledge the fans getting behind players pushing them forward helped team positivity. The crowd were good on Wednesday night with a lot of noise for quite long periods, even after the Norwich goal. Definitely a few tense periods in those last 15 mins or so but the crowd did stick with the team
And dare I say it, Itchen North were at times noisier than the Northam and could start to become their noisy neighbours :-)

How much of the atmosphere was down to the fair ticket pricing for the Watford and Norwich games. I paid £20 for both tickets in their 'black Friday' deal. I think after so long focusing on making st Mary's family, female, vegan, non binary friendly perhaps the club is realising that the raucous support comes from having a hardcore base of working class LADS. We were the ones who got behind the club from league 1 and made st Mary's a fortress, not the bandwagon that jumped on board in the prem. Hopefully from now on the club will price games reasonably more often and get more character back into the ground. | |

The club are fine to welcome tourists, but stick them in the Chapel/Itchen corner instead, or the first rows of the Kingsland. Generally somewhere it is quieter.
The sooner they realise that players respond to a GOOD atmosphere and stop trying to alienate the core of the support, the better.

Fact is the club put out a £399 season ticket meaning that it was £21 a game, so they have been trying to attract those that cannot afford the Premier league prices all season and in that section prices for individual games are between £20-£40 depending on the game.
There are still a big hardcore from the League One days who have season tickets, the cheap tickets for the last two games did not see significant numbers of "returning" fans, perhaps 1,000 or so.
The big difference was that the negativity wasn't in the stadium, on social media the Gao out brigade has been prevalent, they have been screaming without really knowing what they are demanding and for those on line it creates a toxic atmosphere that has ben brought to games.
If you dared to suggest that you wanted to support the team you were accused of being a happy clapper, despite the fact the real happy clappers are the ones that slag off the club on line but do nothing physically to try and change things, perhaps unhappy clappers is a good moniker for them
But the hard core have fought back, it started at Arsenal and has continued in the last two games at St Mary's a group of fans did stand up and do something to change the atmosphere and that helped greatly in the last two games.
No one is saying that everything is rosy at St Mary's but we have had a section of fans who seem to be almost willing failure to happen so they can have a good moan, the last two games they haven't been there. | |

Yes there are a lot of new-age knobs that go and bring the atmosphere down with their tutting and incessant moaning nowadays and yes ticket prices are too high, no-one normal will dispute this, but let's face it; both Norwich and Watford aren't the most attractive draw to the casual fan, both were evening games, both were on tv, the weather was freezing and the team have been playing shite. All reasons why both crowds had a more hardcore feel to them....it separated the wheat from the chaff.

Ticket prices are too high in general, but Saints new pricing structure is broader than before and better than most, ticket prices are only too high when results are going badly in most peoples eyes.

I've said this many times before but we have a number of nippers who've only grown up with "success" they've never been in the mud with Saints like most of us have and have some deluded idea that football is like a computer game and somehow Saints can be a champions league side playing in a 55,000 seater stadium that's full every week.
The fact that there's not a shred of evidence to prove this doesn't matter to them and they then moan when we don't do well.
These tend to be the same ones that are the first to ditch us when things go badly, and what you're left with, like at the Leicester game, are the more realistic fans who know our place in football and will go whatever division we're in, and back Saints no matter how bad we are.
I know it's an unpopular view but i'd rather have a 25,000 seat stadium with the second lot of fans over a 35,000 seater stadium with vloggers, selfie takers and new age premier league fans every day of the week.
As one of those that stood behind you at Arsenal Nick you'll know we made a f*cking racket all game, and to be honest that's partly because that's what we were brought up on, no matter the score (or how we were playing) at the Dell you'd sing your heart out.

Here here and I applaud those making an effort to improve the atmosphere and promote the resurgence of the football culture we were brought up on. To be fair we're not doing anything special, more that we've managed to get a decent bunch of lads together, most of who grew up on the Milton and Bikeshed and were bored as f*ck at the direction our support had headed.
The Committee stuff was a pretty blatant rip off of the original Ugly Inside too, problem is our younger generation and the post '96 lot are f*cking snowflakes without a sense of humour and got offended by it and grassed it up to the club and our FIO.
As for actually singing at away games and home games, it's not hard (well to stay in tune for most of us maybe it is) but we just thought f*ck it lets have a laugh.

I'm not that active on Twitter, but a lot of the Committee stuff I saw was about encouraging like-minded people to congregate in one area, so they're not scattered all around the ground or the away end and diluted by the freaks. That's what we've been lacking for a good few years now (as well as some originality in the singing repertoire's) and from what I've seen, there has been an improvement. It's unbelievable that people object to that.
It's not rocket science stuff, but no-one's managed or been interested in trying to sort it out previously, so I hope the principle of it doesn't die a death. | |
