Saints 3 Bolton 2 place was rocking from the 90th minute Saint 4 Swindon 2 - brilliant atmosphere and game Saints 1 Newcastle 0 - we'd gone 20 odd games without a win then got a last minute penalty which Ruddock scored

Plenty of spineless performances at the Dell too. But if there is a deference it's in football as a whole. Players paid a fortune dont need to worry, if their team is relegated they'll just move on for a huge signing on fee somewhere else. Maybe the crowd standing only 3 feet away helped to focus minds.
Some of the great games were Mid week matches, especially Cup Matches. A few that spring to mind straight away are the 1974 5-0 League Cup trouncing of Derby, who went on to be Div 1 (old money) Champions. We were in Div 2 at the time as were a certain other team along the south coast who Derby had smashed 5-1 at The Old Girl a few weeks earlier. Back then there was no such thing as resting players for cup matches. I think Channon got a hat trick. 1976 v WBA on the Cup winning run mid week replay, 4-1 ...did channon get a hat trick then as well? We scored early doors with thousands still trying to get into the ground. Don't think I've ever felt so squashed at a game. On the back of the Cup win we drew Olympic Marseilles in Round 1 of The Cup Winners Cup ... and sent them packing 4-0. Channon was obvioulsy slacking by then ... he only scored 2!! One of those great Cup nights under the lights LOL. Another cracking tie later on v Anderlecht ended in tears but it was still an amazing night. Another Cup Cracker v Leeds in SF LC 2nd Leg. Pretty tense affair but another day out at Wembley was the reward, with Terry Curran scoring his only goal for us about 2 inches out but still nearly missed!! Due to being overseas I missed the classic games such as Grey Shirts 3-1 and the 6-3 v Man U, and the 4-1 Chris Nicholls kids and Valentines Day 4-2 Massacre of Liverpool, and of course MLTs last game ever goal v Arsenal. One of the best games of soccerball that I have ever seen was the thrilling 3-2 win over Man U with the Keegan disallowed wondergoal. Probably the most poignant match for me was the 3-3 comback game v Liverpool which I knew was going to be my last chance to visit The Dell. 0-3 down at HT was not how I wanted to say goodbye to the place where I'd had so many happy times. What a comeback, another 3 minutes and we'd have won for sure!!
As other people have said, we may not have had many star players but you knew they'd give everything, and the fans appreciated it and stuck with them for the most. It was a shame to leave, but the reality as it was a relic and before Sky and TV revenues really started to run the game, attendences of 15252 were holding us back. But No Regrets old friend you served us well.

Recently relegated Saints, struggling near the bottom of Div 2 having just 2 wins from their opening 11 Div 2 matches v the Champions of Division 1 that season Derby.

The Swindon game... I still remember the le tiss free kick bent around the wall and crept inside the post. It was right in front of me, being a Milton Muppet for the night ...I burned that moment in my memory . I can replay it like a video
I think we were 2-0 down in that game weren't we? Got it back to 2-2 and scored twice In extra time.
The ruddock penalty against Newcastle , again that moment is burned in my brain. There was confusion on who was going to take it and Jimmy case even put his hand on cockerel's shoulder. Then stomper ruddock run up and slammed it home.
It felt like we won the league !!
keep the faith coyr

My first game in 1968, 6-2 against Villa, a brace each for the Big Chiv and Ron Davies I was right behind the goal at the Milton end but then all the crowd were closer to the pitch, later on tough tacklers like Franny or Mark Dennis would send attackers over the hoardings and into the terraces. Intimidating.
Fast forward to our first game at St Mary's, all at sea and Thierry Henry, used to the bigger space, plus the lack of atmosphere from the now detached home fans, ran the show. The rest as they say is history.

Yep the Swindon game we were 2-0 down at half time. Barry Horne scored early in the second half then Nichol brought on Ruddock and Shearer, Shearer scored the equaliser, the le Tiss and rod wallace scored in extra time. Like you I was in the milton and remember the bend of the free kick, great goal. The dell was rocking that night.
The Newcastle game was vital that season, after that win we finished quite strongly but Newcastle went down. Could have been the other way round if we didn’t get that penalty. We started that season really well, then went on that terrible run where we actually played some quite good stuff, but we dropped down the table. Imagine if we went on a 20 game run without a win now. Our fans can’t cope when we lose two games in a row against top 6 clubs.

For me these were very special memories for me in no particular order:
Standing on a upturned milk crate in 1971 so I could see properly as the terraces were not steep at all
Barry Horne getting the last gasp goal against Bolton to send the crowd mental in the cup. Many fans had already left the ground, I was on my way out of the ground then rushed back in with many others. Lucky there wasn’t a nasty accident .
Terry Curran putting saints through to the league cup final 1979 I was in West stand corner by Archers , mental scenes.
Matts goals v Newcastle
4-1 stuffing of Liverpool the best I’ve ever seen Saints play EVER.
Channons goal v Liverpool best goal I’ve ever seen .
1974 5-0 v Derby who were the best team in the land everyone was stunned
Shearers debut hat trick v Arsenal
Matts goal v Arsenal
Three wins on the bounce v United 6-3 , 3-1, 1-0.
Hughie Fishers goal v Villa to keep us in FA cup in 76 and get replay
Stuffing West Brom at the Dell when they won cup in 76.
As a nipper sitting outside the Milton Road End waiting to get in. Draping the scarf through the hoops on top of the wall behind the goal. A wooden rattle, half time marching band, the smell of linament and the little alphabet scoreboard telling you the half time scores elsewhere.
“Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously'
What great cup nights there were at Dell. Full ground, proper floodlights, great atmosphere, teams going for it rather than now it being played in front of silent half empty stadiums
