Can anyone answer this one.

When Tosh took over as player manager was 28 or 29 I think.
Can't imagine a player leaving a top club to manage at that young age now.
How did this come about was he still in the Liverpool team when he left.

Tosh was all set to sign for Leicester but he failed a medical but a few months later he was allowed to join the Swans as player manager after watching them lose at Rochdale.

Plus the fact that he turned down returning to Cardiff as a player.

His shoulders were too wide to carry his knees.

Player managers were not that unusual at the time, and there was not the same "stigma" regarding playing outside the top division.

Also Tosh would have seen the young talent in the swans squad, Charles, Curtis, James in particular and realised he'd have top flight quality players in the 4th division and he was onto a winner.

Most top players back in the day used to drop down the divisions top up their money because they couldn’t afford to retire.

24 Goals in 63 games not bad for a cripple of a player/manager!

Tosh was on the way to Anderlecht but he failed his medical. He then wanted to join Cardiff as a player coach but was knocked back by Cardiff.

When Malcolm Struel heard of this he contacted Tosh and the rest is history, and he became the youngest manager in the Football League at 28.

What attracted Tosh to the Swans were the amount of talented young players, but most of all was the gentleman's agreement he had with Struel, in that if he was successful down the Vetch and Liverpool came calling he would be allowed to leave, something which nearly happened in 1982.

My impression was that it was mainly the fitness issue. I don't know if the memory is fading, but as I recall Tosh couldn't generally manage 90 minutes and there were several games when he came on as a late substitute and scored crucial goals.

Not sure about Anderlecht but he did fail a medical at Leicester City. Ongoing thigh and knee problems were preventing him from reaching required fitness levels at Liverpool who allowed him to leave on a free transfer

He was an outstanding target man, one of the best. His perfect hat trick for Wales whilst a Swan in a 3-0 win v Scotland showed just how effective he was even when only 70% fit.

Apparently he met Struel by chance. Incredible to think what he achieved as a 28 year old and new to management...
