The polls show an increasing polarization: the vast majority of Brexiteers want a no deal Brexit. On, the other hand, the majority of voters now want to remain in the EU. I'm not sure that an exit deal would make anybody particularly happy.

What the UK thinks:

https://whatukthinks.org/eu/opinion-polls/uk-poll-results/

An interesting question would be, how many people believe that Brexit will lead to the break up of the UK? Scotland will almost certainly demand independence and there will be a resurgence of violence in Northern Ireland, making Irish reunification much more likely.

And how exactly would the Scots stand on their own 2 feet post-independence without the English billions being invested? They would be bankrupt within 3 months.

The Scots are well capable of standing on their own.

What sort of trouble can you see? Any particular part of Ireland?

On the contrary. If peace exists between Southern Ireland and NI for a generation and then another generation all the sectarian divisions that have been instrumental in our most successful divide and rule strategy disappear. A resurgence in division will only serve to strengthen the Protestants desire to remain British and the Protestants form the majority. Therefore in the case of NI Brexit is a very good thing for the Union.

In the case of Scotland I say let them go. North Sea oil is dwindling. Renewables are rising. At a point in the future Scotland will become a most unwelcome burden. At that point if they are an independent nation ruled by the EU (what an irony...) if they are not subsidised enough they will run back to us begging us to rule them just as they did before. At this point we will take them back under our wings as inferior members of the Union just as they should be.

"Protestants form the majority"

You're a bit out of touch:

Anyone who doubts that Brexit will lead to further violence in Northern Ireland is living in a fool's paradise.

So Protestants form the majority. Thankyou for enforcing my point.

How any sane person could interpret this to mean anything other than what it clearly states is beyond me:

‘Majority rule’

In this context, the 2011 census was a “demographic watershed”. For the first time, the proportion of the population declaring themselves as Protestant or brought up Protestant fell below 50 per cent: “In a society characterised by debates over ‘majority rule’, where consent by a majority underpins the legitimacy of the state, the absence of a religious majority is an important symbolic marker,” the report states.

In 2011 there were slightly more Protestants but in 2019, there is an even split.

By 2021, however, it is projected that there will be more Catholics than Protestants in Northern Ireland.

Latest figures from the Department of Education show that 51% of schoolchildren in Northern Ireland are Catholic, 37% Protestant and 12% Other.

Those Scots do have a lot of chat for a population the size of Yorkshire. Sporrens and Scotch might just keep them afloat and that young Jeanette Kranky in charge up there certainly has a lot of spunk.

Agree with all you guys!
It was an excellent EU strategy to confect and weaponise a completely unconnected issue like the old Micks tooling up again to scare the shit out those stupid thickos who voted leave.
My Pa says let’s encourage as much trouble and conflict as possible to teach them a lesson — never mind our country, there’s the bigger issue of proving we were right and that’s what matters.
So if we’re going to go down, like all retreating armies let’s at least have scorched earth policy, indulge in as much sabotage as possible and take the b*ggers with us.

Cheers all,
Dom.
(Still in ‘Tuskers’ for the season).
