Very proud to be voted Planet Swans Poster of the Year 2017 by my fellow posters. Especially on a site that nearly had 20 million impressions last year.
After a decent first 10 minutes I started to worry that we had not given ourselves enough decent opposition pre season and we were going to be found out by a more physical and technically better side. Thought we did well to stay in it in the first half.. The second half was much better and the writing was on the wall before the substitutions began in earnest. Borja really looks the part in this side and I really hope we can get at least a season out of him before he moves on. In the end this was an encouraging win against a very good side. I left the ground feeling optimistic. Watch the Yanks sell Ollie, Borja, and VDH leaving us with a weaker side to start the season. In such circumstance my optimism will disappear out the window with it's ass on fire.

Birch would be the one making the call. If we get the right offers and they want to go, then of course they will be gone. Even if we could get shot of the leech Ayew, that would still hold, as it always will. They already seem to have done what they can to keep McBurnie, but if 18m were true, that would probably be that.
We did struggle after spurning a couple of good chances but we didn't panic after conceding and kept our heads. Cooper changed the game putting Borja on and Celina was excellent down the left hand side defensively. Good signs all round, from the coach to the players. Had a tough obstacle but overcame it. Can't wait for saturday now.

that was the way i saw it, after the initial good start, atalanta came good and we seemed to be on the defensive too much, if they had better finishing we could have been worse off. when we attacked we looked better, but we were struggling off the ball.
I also had the same thought that maybe our other pre-season games had been too easy.
in the second half, the cooper team talk must have done the trick - we came out a lot more lively and more on the attack. also much more lively winning the ball back. when they made their first few subs, just after this, it was a real good battle. both teams were going for it 100% and it went on for a while, eventually we seemed to come out on top (maybe they got a bit tired), then when borja came on we really looked the better team, they struggled with both borja and mcburnie on together.
overall a draw may have been a fair result, but will gladly take the win. i doubt we will face much better competition in the championship, and i don't think we have reached our best form yet.
everyone would be gutted if some of our better players leave now, esp after they have been a big part of our pre-season. the attendances could drop if this occurred, it would be deflating for the fans, the team, and the management.
I thought we had a culture shock in the first half, the intensity and tempo of Atalanta caught us napping imo. We started being up for it though as the first half went on, and I reckon that was a good match to play for us to get us up to speed for the coming season.
How many were down there anyone know?

I know he is a coach and not a manger but I found it a bit worrying that is appears no one has spoken with him with regards to Jeff. That sounds a bit like the way Jenkins treated Frankie. Surely with the new season approaching he should be kept fully informed of squad developments and players available to him.

The first hals was reminiscent of Clement's Swans but with more fouls. Hard to say who did really well or not as their players and style changed throughout the second half. My MotM was Joe Rodon. Roberts was excellent taking his goal but was generally slow - didn't f and blind at anoyone and only started getting ratty in the second half. CBs solid Seagull didn't impress and allowed their player acres to tee up his shot at goal. McKay was, apart from 2 runs, really poor. Grimes was again anonymous and Fulton solid. Dyer was busy but not very effective. McBurnie had a hopeless task up front on his own. Celina in and out - as much good as not. A few forays and a lot of effort but long periods when Atalanta were toying with us. Only 1 - 0 at half time = a bit of a steal. Things picked up in the second half especially with the introduction of Borja and then we took control after Naughton and then Astro and Wilmot came on. Decent work out Only real concern was the missed chances again.
Coops quickly changed tack to say he only wants to talk about the players he has. I take it that means both Montero and Carroll are not avialable and neither will Andre make a return. Probably best to come out and say it. I agree Cooper needs to move ahead. If he gets the option of returning players good but no need to focus on that now in pre season.

Well it is possible two players he 'has' , and were picked in the final game before the season starts, could be offski. Namely Ollie and Borja. Don't rule out VDH either. I don't trust the Yanks, or their regime, further than I could throw them. If this lot transpires then Coops could be planning his next move just like Potter.....

I think they’d lose the whole fan base if such an act of bare faced sabotage was carried out. Like on another thread I said that with DJ’s money, the Ayew transfer fee and wages off the books and whatever parachute money that is coming this season (if we haven’t already borrowed against it!) we should be more than solvent, especially if Ayew senior goes out on loan .

We did borrow against it (the first instalment, at least) and the wages off the books just about cover the annual parachute payment reduction (from 55% to 45% this summer).
The only ground we've made up is the transfer fees for DJ, Jordan Ayew and Potter's gang. Which will be maybe £20m, probably paid in instalments over the next few years, with cuts paid from the reported figures to agents and other hangers-on. I don't doubt we're solvent, but more than that is probably optimistic. Next season the parachute payment drops from 45% to 20%, which is a massive drop off. Obviously we're going to win the league and get promoted but the club has to have one eye on that.

A lot of ifs. James' sale meant there was no need for a fire sale (Birch) but big savings were still needed (also Birch). Of the three big money obligations the club has stated it needs to get off the books, to allow us to keep the players we have and possibly bring in others, (depending on the receipt of fees) only one has left. Wilmot has been brought in but only after Ayew left. That is consistent with Pearlman and Birch's comments about the need to release players before others can be brought in. Montero and Carroll are also on hefty wages and neither are playing. Birch also needs to be planning for next season or we will have another season hamstrung by financial rather than footballing issues.
15m from James was straight into the bank account, another 7m in instalkments(if ever). 3m and 2m from Potter and Ayew straight into the account, Birch has worked wonders. The main reason we are in no need to sell is because Birch has not lived on selling with instalments.
If the Yanks leave Birch alone and don't come sniffing in the last week when the offers come in, we will be OK.
Since the 1st July and with James' sale it meant there was no need for a fire sale (Birch) but big savings were still needed (also Birch).
From a footballing point of view only Fer played last season (and only briefly) so there was no need to replace them. Although we saved money from them leaving that only reduced our potential wage bill and only Ayew's recent transfer has brought in any money. Pearlman & Birch commented (17th June) that they were in agreement with Curtis and Briton that the new manager (installed around 18th - 19th June) should assess the squad before decision on what positions and players were needed / want /were to come in. The goal was to have two competent players in each position. If offers of 'silly money' were to be received any player might be sold ... as happens in 'every club'.
It means nothing if a suitable replacement is not brought in, that is the worry for sure. I think after what happened on the last day of the winter window..... There is a concern amongst fans for sure.
