Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 108209 views | johnhoop | Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event. For me the most interesting questions about team selection are; 1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me. 2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood. 3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make. Any thoughts?

Ashes thread on 17:32 - Jul 24 with 2587 views | ElHoop | Ireland need to get to 200 or thereabouts, as it'll be 100+ in front and also old man Murtagh doesn't have to bowl much again today. If it starts to turn tomorrow then McBrine could be a bloody nuisance.
Ashes thread on 17:37 - Jul 24 with 2579 views | runningman75 | In this heat I am surprised so many wickets going down at Lords. The pitches there are usually good batting ones. Is it great bowling , poor pitch or terrible batting? I suspect the latter.

Ashes thread on 21:47 - Jul 24 with 2448 views | qprd | As good as England’s odi batting is, England’s test team basically is one world class batsman with a crap top order, a bunch of mediocre middle order test batsman and a deep-ish batting tail You got bailed out by Virat kohlis poor captaincy last summer to win that series 4-1.... Sam Curran single pulled two tests out of his ass, and India should’ve won the Edgbaston and rose bowl tests Then beat Sri Lanka but they’re possibly the worst test playing nation in the world And then lost a series to a glorified T20 team in West Indies England test is overrated. Australia is not the Australia we’re used to, but if I was an England fan, I’d be happy to draw the series
Ashes thread on 22:33 - Jul 24 with 2425 views | CiderwithRsie | One of my fave bugbears is that the ICC test rankings are pretty much on the money, so long as you look at the points total and not just the place (same as you would a football league table) England aren't "overrated" - they're ranked top in ODIs but only 4th in tests. I reckon that's about right. Aus are 5th by a clear margin of points and I reckon that's right too. Should be a close series but home advantage probably decisive. With a new top order those rankings could change but since ours has been crap for a couple of years so I reckon if it changes it'll be for the better. India have been top test side for some time now and claiming that a 4-1 beating by England was some sort of freak is just shoulda coulda blether.
Ashes thread on 23:24 - Jul 24 with 2399 views | qprd | Its not blathering- With good captaincy, India should've won that series. England's batting was godawful that series, other than a few matchwinning performances from Curran and a few decent knocks from Buttler. Root was in bad form by his high standards, Cook was living off his double century against Australia and consistently failed until the oval send off. That England team was not particularly strong, as proven by the consistent selection of Keaton Jennings and the fact that they were basically 70-4 in every innings. And England was greatly helped by bad captaincy, poor selection (selecting 2 spinners at lords, persisting with injured ashwin) and lack of killer instinct Separately, no one cares about the test rankings, other than maybe being 1st. My point is that England's test team is overrated by its own cricketing media which seems to think that England's incredible ODI team will translate to a good test side. And as for Australia, its nonsensical to think that their current rankings mean anything. They played a year without the best test batsman in the world, and another world-class batsman. Would India have won the series against Australia with Smith and Warner? Probably not
Ashes thread on 23:30 - Jul 24 with 2385 views | bob566 | Why is there two teams? A odi team and a test team. Sorry if that's a stupid question. Assuming a test team has to have so many home based county players and the odi team all play in ipl [Post edited 24 Jul 2019 23:33]

Ashes thread on 00:02 - Jul 25 with 2361 views | acricketer | The different formats of cricket demand slightly different skillsets. 50 over cricket and T20 are a very condensed version of the game so the priorities are batsmen who can score quickly and bowlers who can contain the run rate. Test cricket demands far more concentration as the pitch wears over 5 days. Captains are not handcuffed by fielding restrictions , so can set fields to expose batsmen's weaknesses and exert pressure on the scoring rate. Test cricket suits batters who can establish long innings and bowlers who can take wickets since you only win by taking 20 wickets in the match as opposed to just scoring more runs. It's why Jason Roy is a monster in limited over cricket and a bambi in Test cricket terms. Today showed that he has a lot to learn if he is to step up to the demands of test cricket.
Ashes thread on 03:31 - Jul 25 with 2336 views | timcocking | 'England have now lost all 10 wickets in a single session four times since 2016, having previously not done so since 1938.' That's poor.
Ashes thread on 09:33 - Jul 25 with 2279 views | ElHoop | It's poor but looking at it another way, Ireland needed to turn up here and give their game a boost, especially with us just winning the World Cup. Cricket is slightly different to football in that we all want to see the game develop around the world and to reflect that the smaller nations have to improve and indeed beat us sometimes. So even if we do ultimately win this test, we've learned some lessons and so have the Irish players. I'd actually like to see Ireland win though, as they have bowled well and whilst their batting looks fragile (echoes of Afghanistan in the World Cup) it's looked better than ours so far! It's a very hot day so I'm expecting to see a Bunsen Burner by the afternoon.
Ashes thread on 10:37 - Jul 25 with 2268 views | ElHoop | From Cricinfo: Chris Crighton: "So England won the toss, elected to bat, and eight hours later their openers were 0-0 at the close. All of Geoffrey Boycott's dreams have finally come true." Nailed it
Ashes thread on 10:58 - Jul 25 with 2245 views | Antti_Heinola | What do people think about the coach? Obviously Bayliss is off after the Ashes, and Giles (who I am far from convinced by - I know Straussy had to leave, and the reasons were sad and valid, but to me he seems a much better overlord than Gilo) has said there will only be one overall coach, but I really feel it's time for specialist coaches now - one for red ball cricket, one for white ball. The disciplines are now miles apart, as are the teams. Thoughts?

Ashes thread on 11:13 - Jul 25 with 2233 views | qprd | thats excellent another interesting stat from TMS- england have only crossed 400 once in the last 29 innings (cooks last match against india at the oval). i have tickets to day 4 of this test, so im praying for a monster innings and some rain tomorrow
Ashes thread on 11:19 - Jul 25 with 2223 views | ElHoop | It has sounded as if Morgan has become more of a player-manager type so maybe he doesn't need too much 'management' above him, compared to the nomal odi setup. I would imagine that they'll try to keep him with the odi side when he does eventually retire.
Ashes thread on 13:19 - Jul 25 with 2195 views | Tonto | much improved batting today, but disappointing that Burns was out cheaply again. He has been the standout opener in the County Championship for the last few years, so utterly deserves his place. Meanwhile I kinda like the look of Roy at 3. If the initial lacquer and ball movement has been knocked off for a few overs (assuming our openers last that long) 3 could be a really good place for him. Certainly better than Denly. But that would mean finding yet another opener... and Burns has hardly nailed down the other spot.

Ashes thread on 17:25 - Jul 25 with 2013 views | ElHoop | Well we're making very hard work of this. Maybe a 150 lead will be enough to scrape home, but even that looks beyond us at the moment.
