Dan James to sign new deal on 18:22 - Apr 1 with 3508 viewsvalleyboy

It’s why the discussions have stalled with his agent

As I said before and you may not like it, but James/his agent are in the driving seat

Saying he wants a clause releasing him for £4m is basically a long winded way of saying no deal.

It’s a ridiculously low figure considering even Leeds we’re putting a 10 million price on his head. Perhaps it’s his way of saying feck you to the club for pulling the plug on the Leeds move. I hope Trev sorts him out

Each time I go to Bedd - au........................

When a player knows what he’s really worth and the interest that Swansea have shown in keeping him

Then what do you expect

As for James saying I’m happy in Swansea

What does supporters expect him to say

I hate being here

Which is probably more closer to the truth than him saying otherwise

Assuming there’s some truth in the Wales Online article, which there may well not be of course, that would be Dan James/his agent saying they aren’t really interested in a new contract (at whatever terms we are offering) because they know we will look at bids in the summer and they could get better, either career wise or financially, elsewhere.

No way the club gives him a contract with a £4m release clause when they could keep him on his current deal until the end of the August or January window and sell him for a lot more than that, even with his contract running down.

As the club has been very good, recently, about not releasing information about transfers it looks to me like the agent and player are trying it on.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?

Ask yourself in why the year end financial report is about a month late

But even without that you can work out by how players were let go for virtuall peanuts

Desparete signings that Swansea made to try to keep themselves in the Premier League

Paying considerable amounts money to players that were out on loan

Money still owing on previous transfers

Possibly even an overspend on this years campaign

Paying off managers

You can easily come up with a figure of at least £50 million

Now that Swansea are playing in the Champiknship and for probably many more years to come

That £50 million is not going to get less but more

Do you honestly believe that???

Manasseh is not dull and knows that Swansea will have to sell James to do something about the black hole in their finances

In that scenario, what is the benefit to the player or the agent? They both must know we could easily sell Dan for triple that in the summer. Asking for a £4m release clause is pointless.

I’m calling Wol bullshit.

Maybe they could sell him for more than that in summer.

That presumes player agrees to move. Could well view it as one season left at Swansea then choose where he wants to go.

Well considering Leeds have already offered more it is absolutely illogical. Perhaps he wants to move to Blackburn or Stoke instead and is just keeping the bar low

Low clause they know club won't accept so no new contract.

Leave at end of contract, higher signing on fee and wages as a result.

Considering that Giggs sees DanJames as the next wonder kid of Welsh football

Only a fool would think that James will land up in clubs like Blackburn and Stoke

Manasseh knows what he is doing and he has Swansea where he wants them

I will say that James will go for no more than what Leeds were prepared to pay for him

This time it will be different in that he will go to a much bigger club than Leeds

Exactly. Why even bother with contract negotiations if they include ridiculous clauses that are never going to be accepted.

But that would mean playing for an extra year on his current very low wage. With no guarantee Potter would make use of him once his intentions are known, given the selection priorities he's shown this season.

Not especially young to be making his breakthrough in the first place, can he afford to lose another year? It's like with Connor, everyone thought he was going to play billy big bollcks and take the club to the wire despite only having half a season under his belt. Could be forgotten as quickly as he's emerged.

Potter wouldn’t use him if his intentions are known

Take James out of the current squad and where would Swansea be

Just look at the last game at Nottingham Forrest and although Swansea lost. James was the star player

If he can play for Wales like he did last week. He would hold his own in most Premier League clubs

You know probably better than most that Swansea have to sell James just to get some money into the club

If I remember correctly

Wasn’t it you that put some figures up in a thread showing how Swansea had wasted money on transfers to the tune of something like £40-£50 million

When I read that posting I could easily have put another £10-£15 million onto that figure

James has high profile, seems a quality player.

If you're saying Potter won't pick him then Potter would be cutting his nose off to spite his face.

One more year at low wage to more than make up on multi year deal.

We're playing Gunnarsson knowing he's off end of season - gives everything every game. James plays for you, he's auditioning for next club hence motivated to do best.

Potter did the same with Routledge and Dyer up until December, giving players with long term futures here games ahead of them. He's outright said he used so many players in the first half of the season not to win football matches but to make everyone feel involved and improve the group long term.

Narsingh and his agent played hard ball over their contract (not fcking off without being paid in full) and has been ignored almost entirely (also he's a bad player tbf).

Potter has plenty of form for it. If there's substance to the current stories then don't be surprised to see Asoro starting more games from now on. We're not fighting to survive in the PL, the stakes are much lower for us game by game.

Unlike with Ramsey running his contract down, as DJ is/will be under 24 we would be due a compensation figure from whichever club took him on (this is in addition to the amount we get from training him from age 16-now as part of the EPPP).

http://fullcontactlaw.co.uk/2016/11/compensation-players-24-mystery/

A full international player moving from a Championship club to potentially a PL one would be a decent chunk of change in arbitration, you would imagine.

The lad and his agent need to keep their feet on the ground. He's done nowhere near enough to start going all billy big bollox.

And again you know rhe pittance Swansea would get

On the one hand we give a player a pay rise and signing bonus and pay his agent and sell him for £4m this summer. Got to think a fair few clubs would be in for him at that price. Agent makes out like a bandit, probably.

On the other we say no deal, keep the player on low wages, and either sell him for a better fee this summer or January (Leeds offer to complete the transfer was supposedly £8m+) or get use of him for another season and receive compensation which could be anywhere between £500k+ (Cresswell) and £8m+ (Ings) depending on how well he does and what his value is perceived to be (and again, Leeds offer to complete the transfer was supposedly £8m+, which arbitrators would have to take into account). By which point his agent may well be banned from football again, who knows.

It's strange how all the stories planted in the media value DJ so low. £2m on day. £4m now. Interesting strategy, really.

Football works in mysterious ways and who knows, Dan might surprise us all and sign an improved contract before the end of the season. There is a buzz amongst the youngsters who Dan has grown up with since joining from Hull City and along with the respect for Potter, that might well see him sign another 2 year deal. But if he doesn’t there is no doubt that there will be bigger clubs than Leeds queuing up to sign him.
Should Dan decide not to sign a new deal there is no point in waiting until January, he has to be moved on in the summer and at the moment a down payment of £12/14M plus future add-on should seal his signature.
