Rooney getting another England cap 18:21 - Nov 4 with 8221 views | BlackCrowe | Ridiculous and indicative of the circus that our once great game has become. He wasn't even that good for England. Thought Southgate had more backbone and purpose. Discuss.

Rooney getting another England cap on 19:21 - Nov 4 with 6566 views | daveB | Ridiculous, will Lampard, Owen, Gerrard, Ferdinand and co all get the same send off game. What about giving Bobby Charlton or Jimmy Greaves run out. Will we have to do this for Lingaard in 10 years as he had a good World cup I get the Germans doing it for Podolski as he won the world cup but Rooney did bugger all in tournaments after 2004. I'd rather see him get a nice award or something for services before the game then let someone else have a game rather than waste a friendly.
Rooney getting another England cap on 20:00 - Nov 4 with 6508 views | Jigsore | not sure Southgate has much of a choice here. it's f*cking ridiculous. I don't even buy the Charity aspect, our players donate their international wages anyway and pretty much any NT game in the US will sell out anyway. Inviting Wayne back to doss around in a team that almost reached the final of a World Cup with himself and that 'golden generation' consigned to the scrap heap is moronic, laughably and wrongly hubristic.

Rooney getting another England cap on 21:13 - Nov 4 with 6369 views | blacky2013 | Only because he scored in loads of meaningless games
Rooney getting another England cap on 21:15 - Nov 4 with 6365 views | BazzaInTheLoft | Agree with all the sentiments here, except that he wasn’t very good for England (but he could have been better). ‘But he only played teams like Moldova’ I hear you cry! So did everyone else on that list. [Post edited 4 Nov 2018 21:16]

Rooney getting another England cap on 21:20 - Nov 4 with 6355 views | Toast_R | Its only a meaningless friendly/Exhibition and from a business point of view, the fact he's apparently performing well in MLS means a major US channel will likely pick up the match, raising a lot for the FA. Don't have a problem with it. Would be shocking if he was invited back for a Nations League match though but this is nothing of the sort.
Rooney getting another England cap on 22:11 - Nov 4 with 6282 views | TacticalR | As long as it's not against Iceland. Then we'd be in for a hiding.

Rooney getting another England cap on 01:23 - Nov 5 with 6137 views | qprjeff1882 | I just read that he's not even going to start. And will be subbed on in the final minutes so fans can show their appreciation. WTF. If the FA are gonna give him one last cap for a CHARITY game then at least f ucking play him. Shouldn't be awarded a cap if he's just gonna come on for the last 2 minutes just for the sake of it.
Rooney getting another England cap on 02:00 - Nov 5 with 6119 views | timcocking | Not that good for England? Are you talking about England's all-time leading scorer who was on the shortlist for best player on the planet several times? If we have nobody better, why not? Only the English are so unappreciative of their best ever athletes. It's disappointingly a distinctly English trait to slag off your own champions. It could also be argued, Southgate knows the bandwagon brigade will be quick to criticise this decision. It shows he has the strength of character to make unpopular decisions if he thinks it's for the best. I'll concede it's a little surprising, though. Perhaps testament to the dearth of young talent rather than fat Wayne's fault. [Post edited 5 Nov 2018 2:08]

Rooney getting another England cap on 02:40 - Nov 5 with 6098 views | Benny_the_Ball | IMHO an overrated player particularly for country. Sure he scored 53 goals but that was in 119 appearances over 13 years with the so called golden generation behind him. Even Fat Frank managed 29 from midfield. Don't get me wrong, he was good but not one of the game's greats and certainly not worth devaluing England caps with a farcical testimonial. [Post edited 5 Nov 2018 2:50]

Rooney getting another England cap on 08:29 - Nov 5 with 5982 views | kingsburyR | That was some send off for Podolski............ ...........retiring to epic sound tracks is the way forward. JT must have been crying in his full Chelski kit when he saw that!

Rooney getting another England cap on 10:27 - Nov 5 with 5911 views | Antti_Heinola | was a bit surprised but don't really give a fk. Had Lineker got to 50 goals I'd have been happy for him to have similar. It's not hurting anyone is it?

Rooney getting another England cap on 10:57 - Nov 5 with 5880 views | francisbowles | Not sure Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Nat Lofthouse or Tom Finney played many games against the likes of Moldova. Many of their games would have been against the home nations. As for the original point, Rooney never reached his potential probably because he didn't always look after himself as a top pro needs to. The game is becoming a circus, anything to attract a TV audience.
Rooney getting another England cap on 11:09 - Nov 5 with 5865 views | Toast_R | That's true but then before the 70s Charlton and Greaves etc were playing in an era when most goalkeepers were absolute crap.
Rooney getting another England cap on 11:19 - Nov 5 with 5851 views | daveB | He wasn't that good for England though, had a good goalscoring record but when it mattered in world cups and Euros he was usually crap. Plenty of young talent though. Would rather see Callum Wilson get 90 minutes [Post edited 5 Nov 2018 11:20]

Rooney getting another England cap on 11:28 - Nov 5 with 5834 views | thame_hoops | I'm at the game so looking forward to seeing him one more time, all be it I'm in the away end but I'm sure he will get a good reception due to his stint with DC
Rooney getting another England cap on 11:44 - Nov 5 with 5803 views | beanofire1 | You only have to look at how the FA, West Ham and football in general treated Bobby Moore after he retired. Yes, Booby Moore, the only England captain to ever lift the World Cup. Let alone one of the best footballers this country has ever produced. We love building them up and then knocking them down. So terribly English.

Rooney getting another England cap on 13:45 - Nov 5 with 5643 views | Northernr | It's not right. Certainly there shouldn't be caps given out if it's literally a charity game. Sven did irreparable damage to the value of winning a cap for this country the way he dolled them out to all and sundry and messed around so much in the friendlies. He made it clear that it was a farce that he wasn't bothered with, which shifted the power further towards the clubs and away from the national manager when it came to calling players up. He wasted opportunities to work on persistent problems with the team, so the same problems arose in every tournament. He ended up awarding ridiculous amounts of caps to crap like Jenas and Phil Neville, taking them past genuine greats of the past in the stats. I mean just look at the absolute state of this from the game against Australia at Upton Park... James (Robinson 45), Neville (Mills 45), Ferdinand (Brown 45), Campbell (King 45), Ashley Cole (Konchesky 45), Beckham (Hargreaves 45), Lampard (Murphy 45), Scholes (Jenas 45), Dyer (Vassell 45), Beattie (Jeffers 45), Owen (Rooney 45). Subs Not Used: Wright, Joe Cole, Upson, Parker, Davis. But to start handing them out just because somebody's had a good career and is giving a load of cash to charity is a step even further. I mean if Richard Branson offers £30m to charity in return for coming on for 10 minutes for England we gonna go for that as well are we? Are clubs forced to release their players for this glorified circus? If I was a manager I'd tell the FA to go bollox if they wanted one of mine at a really busy time of the season, coming into December with its unworkable fixture list. If they think it matters so little that you can get a call up just because you're a good lad and you're giving money to charity then why on earth should anybody else care? Anyway, I'm covering it for the Telegraph that night so that should be fun
