You're absolutely right. Most of the Belgian team would get in ahead of English players yet they're a far small country in terms of size and population. This is just an excuse Welsh football fans use to justify poor performances.
Even when a world class footballer is born in Wales, they and their family decide to move them to an English set up to ensure they reach their potential (Giggs, Bale) and even Ramsey later on. Even good but not quite world class Welsh born players like Bellamy were trained in England. | |

You've got to compare like with like though. China is such a vast country with social and economic schisms and has no footballing heritage to speak of.
More often than not a large country with a footballing heritage will beat a smaller country with a footballing heritage.
