The difference was back in the 90s although we were sh*t the club was united. We knew we were sh*t, we knew we’d struggle every season. But it was our club and there was a togetherness that is a million miles away from what we’ve got now.

Looking back, old Rupes was a coont. But he was far more palatable than Reed let alone, the Chinaman

Poll: Who is responsible for Liverpool's defeat?

I agree with nearly all of this but I still want to go to football with my mates and the more of us that give up, the more spare seats there are for tourists, Soccer AM “whacky” types etc.

I too was mightily unimpressed about missing out on Bournemouth tickets and I was thinking of going anyway and chancing a spare at the station or in the pub beforehand because I still think it’s got the potential to be a good day out.

I don’t know what the answer is - organised stuff like they did at Palace seems to be looked down on - but if enough people make some sort of an effort to try to make it better again then who knows?

There is a lot of the posts I agree with particularly the original posters talking about the fun of going to SMS when ML was here. Don't forget though we were winning then regularly which is what football fans most want. That was inevitably going to end once we hit the premiership. Until there is a more level playing field in the Premiership it is going to lose its appeal after a couple of seasons.
Two things to make top flight football great again, limit squad sizes, and cap average ticket prices at £20

..and cap wages so that it's a level play field. There will never be parity when one club can buy and pay players for 4 times what others can. If you do well your team is asset stripped by bigger clubs and and you end up in more trouble than you started with.
However the big clubs want to maintain their superiority and revenue and the governing bodies all bow down and enable them to continue.
It's ok having bigger clubs right up until everyone else loses interest. If no one else has a chance at anything other than survival then what's the point?

Back in the day, ie eighties and early nineties (pre SKY) there was hope at the start of the season that this season could be your year. Everton has come from nowhere to win a couple of titles and a few cups, Leeds had won the league, Arsenal got back to winning ways, lots of different teams won the cups Wimbledon, Luton, Norwich etc. There was romance and hope. Now the same clubs dominate all competitions, even Spurs and Liverpool for all the media love ins and the money they’ve spent haven’t won a thing in years. Leicester winning the league was great but all it’s meant is that clubs will spend loads of money to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Yes you’re right about all those things. In the 80s you had saints, forest Watford and Ipswich all finishing in the top 3. Smaller clubs won cups. It was possible to build a good team and not have it immediately torn apart by the big clubs, whilst the media and pundits actively sell them saying they deserve a move to a big club.

In some ways Leicester winning the league was the worst thing that could happen to clubs like saints. For one it gave the Football manager type fan a belief that everyone can do a Leicester and we needed to show AMBITION, the other thing was the big clubs pulled up the drawbridge so it never happened again.

Whatever anyone says the premier league is rigged, it’s all set up for the big clubs to succeed and everyone else should just be glad to be part of the self titled greatest league in the world.

Another solution would be for the "big six" to fook off to a European super league and leave the rest of us with a competitive national league.

So glad we're in the lower leagues even though the football is often shockingly bad. I realised long ago that my football day experience is going to the pub with my mates, watching the match then back to the pub after. No gimmicky light shows, no goal music, rarely changing the kick off time for TV and not too expensive STs. The result or quality of the game is totally immaterial. The Championship and League 1 really are the most fun divisions to be in and away trips are much better with usually sensible prices and proper kick off times. Just they're all miles and miles away for Pompey in L1 apart from Charlton and Oxford. I haven't watched MOTD or had a Sky subscription for years and if Pompey ever did play in the PL again I wouldn't pay out for a ST.

I remember the nineties when you'd see Pompey and Saints players out in the bars and clubs in the evenings in the local area, generally all happy to chat with both fans and rival fans. That all stopped when we were in the Premier League but since our decline through the leagues it has got a lot better with players now on not much more money than the average supporter and again you see them out and about and living locally.
Just wish you lot hurry up and get relegated along with Brighton and Bournemouth, and we get promoted, but not because of any hatred whatsoever, just so I'd have some local derby games again and you'd all be so much happier.

With love

Been reading all the posts on this topic and have registered just to agree and support the majority of comments. I thought it was just me who felt this way and was beginning to hate myself as I am Saints through and through and have been since early 70's. I have no time for the 'modern' game it has no resemblance to what I use to watch at The Dell. I am in the same boat as some of you as far as renewing my season ticket next time and I thought I would never say that. Weirdly I wont have that problem if we are in The Championship I shall renew as I know I will be sat at St Mary's with true Saints fans. The League 1 days were very enjoyable but accept this was because we were a big fish. I know you should be careful what you wish for but it sure is no fun at the moment!

I think the general lack of activity on here this morning seems to tie in with a lot of comments and feelings in this post. Monday after a game us normally pretty busy.
