Puppy farms - and avoiding them? on 19:57 - Aug 11 with 2696 viewsdune

The search is over ... I think. Going to look at a King Charles Spaniel bitch tomorrow in Norfolk. Think I'll call her Gizmo.

I got a rescue, not a puppy obviously but the best decision i ever made. Saving a life and giving a dog a home is the way forward for me (plus you don't get the eating all your stuff part).

I have really tried to get a rescue dog, but can't find anything suitable. Most I saw were nasty. I know that's not their fault and possibly they could be rehabilitated, but it's not a certainty, and even if I could bond with it it's doubtful that streak could be eradicated with strangers.

Going to look at ones like these. These are sold but the lady has a 6 week old litter with two left. Tri colour ones.

Our last three dogs have been rescue dogs, and all of them including our current one have been absolutely fantastic and so appreciative of the care involvement and attention that we have given them, but more importantly they have been wonderful additions to our lives and behaved impeccably.

The worst case being (our current one) who was bought as a puppy by a young couple who when they found out they were expecting a child, decided that putting the dog in an old dilapidated avery and spraying him with a hose when he barked was acceptable.

It took nearly a month after we rescued him, for him to start barking again, and is to this day still petrified of hose pipes.

We got a greyhound, ex racer, abandoned after his "career" ended. I had a massive amount of misconceptions about both the breed and rescues but can honestly say it's the best decision i've ever made in my life.

Obviously being a rescue it took time and effort to get him to trust us but these days he's incredible, and as a breed they're the nicest dogs i can imagine, lazy as f*ck but intelligent, loving and great fun.

To be honest with i'd take dogs over humans any day of the week.

Fantastic companions and the best welcome home guaranteed, makes it so worthwhile.

How some people treat these wonderful loyal and grateful additions to the family so badly is incomprehensible.

The only suitable dog I found was a lurcher. He was good as gold. He would have made a lovely pet. I just didn't want that type of dog. Felt really guilty about that but wasn't for me. I am a responsible owner though so have done everything to avoid a puppy farmed dog. The lady I'm going to see in Norfolk sounds very genuine on the phone. Going over today to see the puppies with their mum at 4 weeks and all going well I'd expect to have it at 8, 9 or 10 weeks.

Lurcher, the only dog I've ever been bitten by. Stuck my arm in to prevent an altercation with my Spaniel.

What type of Soaniel have you got? I love them all, such a great good natured breed, but not for the feint hearted, they need a lot of exercise and a lot of patience to train to walk nicely on a lead. I had a working Springer, he was a brilliant dog, very stocky chested springer, nearly all liver, he was so handsome. He was the runt of the litter but he grew into the best dog out of the litter.

Oh this was a long time ago. He was a Lab/Spaniel cross. It happened in a pub in Weymouth in 1984. He's buried in a Bronze Age barrow on the Dorset Ridgeway. Still got the marks on my forearm though. Happy days.

I think these are gorgeous dogs, very rare though.

My springer actually looked like this one. Same colours and same stocky chest and short legs. He was a really strong dog. Very intelligent, but hated loud bangs and thunder so probably would've been useless as a gun dog. He would look you in the eye and you couldn't outstare him.

oh right, it was just that I got my Jack Russel from a rescue center in Norfolk, but that was in Costessey.
It was this place http://www.rspcanorwich.org.uk/
I've had my 'A.J.' for 2 years now, he was about 6 months old at the time, never regretted it, it's a great companion. His previous owner couldn't cope after her husband died.
Took about 3 weeks in all, to get him as far as I remember, they(RSPCA) come round to check your garden, and fences etc. The fee was £100 then.

That's the website that I got my Westie from last year, took a while to sort out the scruffs from the decent ones but ended up getting him from a nice family from Lancashire after weeks of talking to them, visits etc.

Puppy farms are scumbags and you can normally spot them a mile off as soon as you start talking to them.

The woman I spoke to said she had two or three dogs available, but wouldn't reveal her address until an hour before my visit "in case she didn't have any left". When I rang I said I was enquiringly about her puppies (advertised as basically a family home litter) but then asked which ones!!! I asked what had she got available, she said poodles, only after me saying about the ones I read about did she say she had those too. Needless to say I politely told her tofu k off.

My sister wanted a dog last year and ended up going to South Wales just before Christmas, the dogs were being kept in disgusting cages, they couldn't give them the vets paperwork and the family were half cut. My sister jibbed it and left. There has to be far more regulation for here scumbags, making a ton of tax free money from mistreating animals.

I'm quite savvy and naturally untrusting of people, so it's highly unlikely I'd ever be conned, but obviously many people are. These vile scumbags need exposing and the public need more education as this cruelty is rife. I think many people realise what they've encountered once they get there and buy the puppy to save the puppy, but what they need to realise is that by doing so they're just supporting more cruelty. There really does need to be more regulation and tougher sentences to deter the scumbags.

King Charles spaniels are known for their short lifespans Dune. They have so many genetic defects that the poor little buggers don't often make it past 8. Other pure breeds are the same. Dogs from a bigger gene pool will live longer and cost less in vets bills. Crossbreeds and mongrels will typically have fewer health problems as they get older.

Dune - Lurchers really are great dogs - not an obvious choice at first.... but really lovely.
One of mine was found in a Skip the other thrown from a moving vehicle . I just took a gamble and they were brilliant company v loyal and so lazy and chilled out in the house unlike a lot of very active breeds.

Posh people love them too not just traveller folk
Btw !! :)

After all that turns up at the address and it's a gypsy site, a very nice and smart single family site, immaculate grounds etc with ott statues and flower beds. Needless to say I was at that point thinking fook. Spoke to the lady though and hopefully everything will be ok cos I'm having it. It looks like the one queen Victoria had. No kc Certs etc but tbh I'm not bothered about that as I won't be breeding with it, just pray it's healthy. Supposed to be having its jabs next week and I will get the documents.
