YES! Jimmy Webb - just going to post the same... What a writer. I was just listening to the 18.42 minute version (!) of By the Time I get to Phoenix by Isaac Hayes from the seminal Hot Buttered Soul album. Also brilliant!
Saw Glenn perform at the Anvil in Basingstoke about 5-6 year ago, he was awesome. Then caught his farewell tour in London 2 years ago, which was sad but still glad I went. Jimmy Webb did a GC tribute tour earlier this year & I was lucky enough to get to that too, very emotional evening. GC was an incredible guitarist & great singer. This is my favourite song he did, written by John Hartford, with a fabulous solo break in the middle
I had no real interest in country music until I drove around America, listening to the local radio stations. There is quite a lot of nostalgia in the lyrics, which is perhaps why it appeals to you more as you get older. I've been to Nashville and to the last three Country 2 Country festivals at the O2, which is the one occasion each year when the big country singers come over to perform in England.
