Cup quarter final, 4,500 away fans up the other end of the country, should have been a memorable occasion. Over 40 years on the road with this club, it was up there with the worst.

Dreadful night. A place in the semi final up for grabs and we put in on of the worst performances I've seen from a saints team. Not one single player earned their money that night

That and the Sunderland cup match the year before and the Leeds cup match the year or 2 years before that, and then of course the experience this year. We really don't do cup games, especially against northern teams it seems.

For cup capitulations, the Tranmere replay is still hard to forget.

Stockport in the mid ninties. We'd even done the hard part and got a draw up there. FFS. lost the reply 1-2 at the Dell, I think we even took the lead FFS.

think that was re-arranged to a Tuesday night as the Saturday was frozen off or something. Anyway me and my mate drove up there with a bloke we knew from the then local, who was from Rotherham but living down south.
To be fair he took us to a pub and a working mens club for cheap beer before the game, but by god, it was a hell of a long journey home !!

I was living in Derbyshire at the time so it wasn't such a bad drive for me. And at least it was only a tenner.

That said, I've been to some pretty shocking home games and sometimes had a longer drive home than the away fans which is pretty infuriating.

Did the away trip and thankfully it will probably be my one and only time there !! Not a great evening and an even worse Stadium.
It certainly was sickening losing at home, having drawn away - similarly v Luton after Cockerill had earned us an away draw.

Sad thing was that the success of Stockport that season probably promted the signings of Dave Jones, Paul Jones and how could we forget LEE TODD !! :o)

The Luton you talk about, was that the one where we drew up there and lost the reply 1-2 after extra time? I think Danny Wallace had a perfectly good goal disallowed in normal time which would put us through. I think we lost a home reply in the FA Cup that season as well, also 1-2 v Derby.

Whilst we're wallowing in the misery of disappointing nights getting knocked out in the latter rounds of cup competitions by small, northern teams, the 2-0 loss at Oldham in the League Cup Quarter-final replay in January, 1990, is worth a mention. Oldham had that awful plastic pitch, which only they knew how to play on. They beat Arsenal 3-1 on it in the previous round and West Ham 6-0 in the semi-final. But, came unstuck when they had to play on real grass in the final at Wembley. Plastic pitches got banned shortly after that.

The 4-3 collapse at Tranmere was definitely the worst though.

That was the tie which we drew 2-2 at the Dell wasn't it? They scored in about the 5th minute of injury time. I think we led 1-0 and then 2-1 in the first game. THen lost the reply as you say on the plastic pitch.

Luton game I was on about was in 88/89 Season when they only let away fans in for cup games - we had half their main stand / kop and we played in our blue away kit. Cockerill scored a belter from 25 yards to force a League Cup replay at the Dell - which we lost 2-1 with I think Ricky Hill ? scoring a peach in extra time.

Also remember stuffing Luton 6-0 in the FA Cup and I think there was a 6-2 or 6-3 league game around that time as well

Yes, we can't really make too many excuses, because, as you say, they held us to a draw at the Dell. Andy Ritchie was a real goal machine for them that season. They used to ping crosses off the plastic pitch and he knocked them in from close range. I remember the packed crowd at Oldham created quite an atmosphere. That was the most successful season in their history. They reached the semi-final of the FA Cup as well.

I don't think a word was uttered all the way back from the Wirrall that night. We were all so stunned it was actually quite hard to be angry. Anyone still haunted by that capitulation should avoid the Brockenhurst FC clubhouse as the shirt Paul Ridout wore in that match is hanging on the wall.

January's poor show against palace was a strange display, it was like they were still stuck in Sheffield.
Let's hope they turn in a better display in a fortnight.
