Ivor Allchurch - Historical research 10:41 - Dec 16 with 1353 viewsCRTEED7

Hi all,

I am a third-year History student at Swansea University and I am researching into the significance of Ivor Allchurch and why he is considered an important historical figure to study.

In our rich history how is Ivor more deserving to have himself placed at the front of the Liberty?

Would appreciate it greatly if anybody can kindly spare a few thoughts on the 'Legendary Golden Boy'

Maybe I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but if you haven't got it already, read the chapter on Ivor in:

"For Club and Country: Welsh Football Greats" published — 1 Oct 2000
by Peter Stead(Editor), Huw Richards(Editor)

He was my father's hero and therefore by extension, my hero when I started watching the Swans in 1965.

His grandson was a caretaker at my old school. He had a bulldog called tits. Might be worth adding this in somewhere.

Jackportis the brand. “A gifted poster”, “planet swans have a real talent on their hands in the name of Jackportis” sky sports 2018. . JP fully supports posters of LBG, mx orientation and ethnic minority groups. Update - now fully supporting the pansexual community.

Scored a goal in the 1958 World Cup which is ranked right up there in a poll of greatest ever World Cup goals.
Also played for Haverfordwest later on in his career.

Actually- the Peter Stead book has a lot of context of post-war Swansea, relating not just to Ivor. There are several chapters that would be useful. It's a University of Wales Press book so fulfils the academic side. You should be able to get it through the library, but if not I can lend you my copy

I am biased but the greatest nickname ever in football. Perfect for him in all respects. So pleased that statue stands there in lasting tribute. Great player and a good man.

Beware of the Risen People

Agreed, and it a disgrace that STADCO, or whatever they're called, allow chip vans and other vehicles to be parked up in front of it on matchdays.

Totally disrespectful and, at the risk of sounding like Perchie, only in Swansea.

The only older Swans book I have is: Brinley E Matthews' (1976) 'The Swansea City Story. Swansea: Swansea City AFC. It is not that great, but does contain some snippets about Allchurch in its season by season sections in Chapter 4. Ivor Allchurch played for the Swans from 1950-51 season until his 1958 transfer to Newcastle.

The other thing you might check is whether it is possible to gain access to the Evening Post's archive (assuming the paper has an archive).

Some time after Ivor's professional career came to an end, I'm pretty sure he had a job with the Post Office. You would see him walking through the city at about 5am towards the sorting office in The Strand, it would have been the mid 70's.

How times have changed regarding top football players.

It was a privilege to have seen him play.
