One for the old timers. 16:32 - Sep 15 with 5036 viewsmingthemerciless

I was having an argument with a pal of mine the other day. The point of discussion was a game we were both at in the early to mid sixties. The 'Dale were attacking the Church Inn end and were awarded a penalty. The taker stepped up and blasted the ball over the bar, over that low shed like stand at that end and out of the ground ! Rumour has it the ball ended up on the Church Inn bowling green.

My mate says it was Reg Jenkins, I say it was Laurie Calloway.

Anybody else remember this event ?

I thought the reg Jenkins miss was over the sandy and was more mid to late sixties. However I could be wrong as I often am !!

My memory also says Laurie Calloway - it went like a bullet, but sadly way over the goal, stand etc.
I remember some of the opposition players laughing - we just groaned!

I think it was Calloway, he was a biggsh, broad and pretty strong guy and he had a tremendous shot.

Anybody remember the game at Spotland when he was playing on the left hand side of midfield for I think Shrewsbury Town towards the end of his career ? A corner was cleared to him standing about 25 yards out from goal. He met it with a ferocious left foot volley that bent the ball into the corner of the net and it wedged itself between the net and the stanchion ! No arguing wether that went over the line, the 'Dale goalie had to punch the ball out to get it free.

What I don't understand is why he was taking the pen in the first place. We had Jimmy Thompson, Dave Storf and Big Reg, all good penalty takers playing at that time.

Needless to say he didn't take another pen for ' Dale. I can still feel the disbelief that a pro could miss the goals by so much ! I've seen Hornets players not get a conversion from in front of the posts as high as that.

Reg hit the roof of the Sandy with a penalty taken against Walsall in the early 70's. It was a night match and the penalty came in the last minute - a bit like Hendo at Fleetwood - the difference being that we were 1-2 down and vying for a place at the top of the old Div 3 (League 1) at the time. He just blasted it but got right underneath

Should bring up a photo of Laurie C from my old scrapbook of those times - never done a link before so bear with me! Photo is autographed by the man himself.

The Observer always posted the same mugshot of each player taken pre-season and used ad infinitum throughout the season. Can't say I recall the penalty miss but I have cuttings from the Ob of manager Tony Collins contemplating using Calloway as a centre forward. Shades of Hilly and Matt Done I guess - nothing new under the sun!

Big Reg broke the net at the Pearl Street end !

Can't recall if you were there, too, SD, but I remember playing tennis on the "grass" courts at Springy Park one summer's evening, with Mr & Mrs Calloway and Mr & Mrs Smith on the adjacent court. Wouldn't happen today!

Quite a few of the autographs I have were done on Yorkshire Street where my Dad had his printing business. Dale players regularly stopped by at the nearby sports shop - Tommy Butterworths I think? As you say BJ seems a far cry from today's football world.

Remember going to bradford park avenue, getting a free kick about 25 yards out. Reg took the kick and as the bradford formed a wall reg hit it like a thunderbolt. The number five stood stock still and the ball hit him slap bang in middle of the forehead.the ball flew skywards and the centre half was poleaxed. Stayed down for abou ten minutes. Moral, dont mess with big reg.

Was Trevor Butterworth who had the sports shop and Dale players were frequent visitors to there when he had it.

Laurie Calloway has made a successful career in the USA football world.

Definitely Laurie Calloway. Possessed a very powerful shot, but not always in the right direction.
Good article in BACKPASS magazine couple of years ago on Wolves juniors(Academy in today's speak), mentioned Laurie and his successful football ventures in the USA

Thanks for that. I'm pleased some parts of my memory are still intact. Tony Collins made some really good signings for The 'Dale. Laurie was one of them.

According to this link he didn't actually sign for us - Wolves loaned him to us and then forgot about him for four years. it was only discovered when Blackburn wanted to sign him:

Wikepedia says "After two seasons with Rovers he was sent to Division Four club Southport in August 1970 in exchange for Alex Russel."

also Alex Russel on Wikki : "On 10 March 2013, he announced on Twitter, "Officially retiring from playing! 24 yr career, not a bad effort! #greattimes"."

The 24 yrs might not be quite accurate

Alex Russell junior did retire in 2013 and if he was playing from when he was 16 that'll be about right.

remember getting Geoff Hurst's autograph at some kind of promotional event at Trevor Butterworth's shop in the early 70's. Anyone else attend that?

That's Alex Russell and Alex Russell's dad.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?
