Sorry if this is a spackman but only just seen the lotto is going from 49 to 59 numbers, it's hard enough to win as it is, going back to doing the pools when this happens, on a side note last night draw saw people getting 4 numbers get less than if you got 3. Total rip off

I see it's owned by a Canadian fund...

'The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan board is not as unlikely an owner for Camelot as it might first appear. One of the world’s largest institutional investors, it has some $129.5bn (£80bn) in net assets, much of which is invested here.'

'The move [doubling the price of tickets to £2] is an attempt to tackle the fact that Lotto is in decline — sales have more than halved from its peak of £4.7bn a year.'

I cancelled my direct debit today. £8 a week to muck about with on different sporting bets rather than flushing down the Camelot toilet.
The odds on getting 4 numbers according to Lotto website is over 1000/1. On Wednesday those lucky enough to get 4 numbers got 9.5/1 for their £2 stake.
When it goes to 59 numbers in October the prizes stay the same but if you get 2 numbers you will win a free lucky dip entry into next draw not cash. And the odds of actually getting jackpot will go from 14 million to 1 to 40 million!
Absolute thieving vile business

Well that's a mistake, to get 4 numbers from 49 is 211876 to 1.

It's 14,125 to 1....

It's 1032.4.

Chance that your 1st number matches a winning number is 1 in 49/6.
Chance that your 2nd number matches a winning number is 1 in 48/5.
Chance that your 3rd number matches a winning number is 1 in 47/4.
Chance that your 4th number matches a winning number is 1 in 46/3.
Chance that your 5th number doesn't match a winning number is 1 in 45/(45-2) [because there are still 2 unmatched winning numbers].
Chance that your 6th number doesn't match a winning number is 1 in 44/(44-2) [yes, still 2 unmatched winning numbers].

Now you need to accumulate all those chances by multiplying them together:

1 in (49/6)*(48/5)*(47/4)*(46/3)*(45/43)*(44/42) which is 1 in 15486.953. Now this is the chance for that single case occurring, but there are 15 combinations of matching 4 from 6 [6!/(4!*(6-4)!)], so you divide the answer by 15 to get 1 in 15486.953/15 or 1 in 1032.4.

Yes unfortunately did not factor in the 15 possible groups of 4 numbers out of 6

Well you do come up with the figure given on the lottery website but I do not follow your reasoning. You have 49 numbers and the possibility of picking 4 is 211876. Each ticket gives you 15 groups of 4 so you have 211876/15 or 14125 chances of hitting one of the total combinations. Statistics was never my strong point so no doubt you are correct but I don't see the logic what am I missing

John,

I don't know where your 211876 figures comes from so can't say about that.

If you were in a lotto where the maximum winning numbers were 4 then you would have the 14125 number you quote but you need to take the 2 losing numbers into account which drives your 14125 up to 15486. It's that number which has 15 different ways of being fulfilled so 15486 / 15 gives you a 1032.4 chance of getting one of those 15 winning combinations.

OK ignore that of course we are looking at 4 numbers only with the other 2 not matching. My use of simple probability functions would count 4 numbers matching if 5 matched for example.

211876 is the possible combinations of 4 numbers picked from 49

49!/(4!*45!)

Never mind the long-forgotten stats lessons on factorials, what you have to look at is the % slices of pie that go to tax, charity, organisers and prize money.

If they don't change, then your expected return doesn't change. Basic games theory. They tinker with the number of numbers and return for x numbers to try and find the most attractive (and therefore profitable) formula.

Pavlov and Skinner think this is hilarious.

John, you are still assuming there are a maximum of 4 possible winning numbers not 6.

With 6 possible winning numbers you get 49/6 x 48/5 x 47/4 x 46/3 x 45/43 x 44/42 = 15486 / 15 = 1032.4

With only 4 possible winning numbers you would get 49/4 x 48/3 x 47/2 x 46 = 211876

Much harder to get 4 out of 4 than 4 out of 6.

Whatever the exact maths/odds/permutations etc are, 1 in 40 million (up from 1 in 14 million) is just insane.

Really well thanks, Wombat, Dogs have settled well already after the initial excitement of a new place, and the location is great, in the country, 10 mins from town, 25 mins from Lorca and 40 mins to the coast. Am hoping we can set some roots down now, neighbours so far have been great so am settling in well and the dogs are v happy.
