because from an attacking perspective he always looked a real threat right up to the point of the final ball or shot. I guess as an 18 year old it was felt that was a side to his game he would develop. I still think he will.
Running with the ball, Shaw looked excellent for us. He would regularly beat his man and get a ball into the box. Sadly the quality of his delivery was usually poor. But that's a side he can and will work on. I don't think there's much doubt that Shaw will come good, it just might take a while (as it did for Bale). | | | |

I watched Shaw quite closely last season, I don't think he beat his man on many occasions, sometimes he would push forward into space created by the player in front of him cutting inside, but rarely did he take on a player down the line and beat him, mostly he would cut inside to nowhere or stop and pass it sideways.
On the occasions he did get a chance to cross he rarely found one of our players with the ball.
He will get better but he was not worth 30 million we got the best of the deal there | |

I also watched shaw last season very closely and kraken is spot on he was very good going forward but his final ball wasn't . Let's not be silly here shaw will be a fantastic player when he fully matures he was top with the sky stats compared to other defenders as I said before on tackling, dribbling, etc but maybe not crosses .once he works on that he will be great. I agree our squad is stronger now and Bertrand is playing well but I would not have him over Shaw. | |

I can't see Shaw cementing a place at Utd and he will be sold for a fraction of the price in a year or so's time. Van Gaal would never have spent that much on an admittedly talented prospect but that's all he is. Oh and one with a fitness issue.
I'll take the 30 million and Bertrand for a fraction of the price. | |

Sorry but I dont think Shaw was good going forward last season he flattered to deceive, he often got a lot of room to run into, but once he had a man in front of him he couldnt seem to beat himand too often stopped and passed sideways or back.
His final ball was terrible and that sort of tells the story, you cant call a player very good going forward when the stats show that he scored no goals and only had one assist (Funnily enough the same number as Fox in his 3 games last season)
When I pointed all these faults out over the past two seasons I was shouted down, yet now Shaw has gone people are willing to look at his overall game.
Your right Shaw will be a fantastic player when he matures, indeed as a defensive left back he is now and last season was probably the best in the Premier league, however that is not how Man Utd want him to play, look at the room he had against West brom and how little he did with it, he just isnt that sort of player.
Perhaps his crossing will improve, but its not a natural part of his game, you could see Le Tiss could pick a pass at 16, thats the case with most players, you either have something or you don't, what differenciates an average player and a top class player cannot be taught.
Luke Shaws style of play suited us last year, defensively he was superb and he has a burst of speed that gets him out of trouble, however he does not have the engine to play a more wing back role, he cannot get up and down the pitch.
I would have Bertrand over shaw in the fact that he is better suited to the way Koeman has us playing, he can overlap and cross, Shaw cant.
My worry for Shaw is that most top teams have a lot of the ball and because of that play high up the pitch and that just isnt his strength | |

FWIW I agree Nick, its something that drove me nuts last year with hime - the reluctance to get to the deadball line or go outside but constantly go back or go inside on his weaker foot.
It was a breathe of fresh our watching Bertrand do that on saturday in the first ten minutes a great replacement.
Shaw will come good if he leaves Man Utd its the wrong club for him. | |

Err some of is we're singing his praised after seeing him in a frieiny against arsenal mate he was outstanding but many thought it was too much of a risk to bring him in and we were told we couldn't go on a meaningless friendly. The rest is history. | |
