I would have accepted missing out on a suitable winger or right back but not the strike force. Have we forgotten what happened after we sold Ferdinand and did not replace him with an adequate strike force?

It's beginning to feel like a waste of finger tapping, but how can you negotiate with someone until you have something to negotiate for and you know who your manager is going to be and which players you are looking for? And even then, you can't 'do a deal' with people who are pushing everything up in terms of wages, until they want to get real themselves. Do you say 'feck off' if thyey won't do the deal when you want to do it? You might lose a deal you could have got if you'd have stuck around. Nobody knows exactly what the scenario was with these deals which never happened, including you.

OK, lets do some reading rather than just watching Sky. Toronto were willing to let Defoe go, he is by far their highest paid player and a drain on the books. He was brought in my a manager they have just sacked (9 managers in 8 years for them). Although he has scored goals he has also spent time out injured so not been consistently available for them. He is currently injured and not expected to play again before the end of September. He was also expecting very high wages to match what he is earning in Toronto (rumoured to be not far short of £100K per week). Toronto were also looking for a fee well in excess of £6M for him. The board considered the cost, the wages and the injury record for a 31 year old who wouldnt be available until the end of the month and said no thanks.

Diarra is one that will still possibly happen. Again the story on that one seems to be that having agreed to release him on an effective nominal fee the Russians changed their minds and refused to release registration without a much higher fee. Diarra and his agent will now have to go back and negotiate his release so he becomes a free agent.

For Borini, basically could get those terms and the fee to make sense and walked away from a deal which clearly wasnt a first choice option for either party.

I dont think that is bad business or poor planning that those deals didnt happen. The deals werent right and didnt make sense so they didnt happen on the terms and timing on offer.

Would have been great to have a replacement for Remy in the wings, but oddly there arent that many high quality strikers knocking around in the price and wage category we'd want to look at which genuinely improve what we have.

Doyle back on loan would have made sense.

Never knowingly right.

Actually,on paper,Dichio and Gallen looked more than adequate - even had money on them to do well. There was a dearth of available talent at affordable prices, rather like today, and boy did we do "affordable" at that time.

errr isn't there some up and coming lad from our reserves/youth teams that could be blooded?? Too radical an idea?? What happened to that Hitchcock lad, is he still with us, haven't heard anything about him for ages??

Do me a favour! Doyle?? There is no world in which he would have made sense. He was no existant when he played last year, he's disappeared as a player. You don't think he might have scored a few for Wolves in League Two if he was still any good?

Warnock wanting Traore and Dolye and spending £7 mill on McArthur shows he'll never know what's needed for the Prem. Palace will go down.

There is a touch of irony in a club that deliberately does it's business on deadline day for the PR value missing out on a striker because they whacked their demands up fir the inconvenience of a deadline move.

Gutted we didn't get Defoe, really think him & Charlie would be the difference in us getting towards lower mid table,
I really think we need to wrap Charlie up in cotton wool between now & January
Zamora isn't up to it and Vargas is an unknown player
I also Arry works Tarbs to some decent fitness levels in these next 2 weeks as he could be the answer just behind Charlie,
one name I would like to get a chance is Petrasso, no good going back for Johnson or Doyle , lets give this lad a go,

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I'm not sure Borini is all that and I'm glad we didn't cave into his wage demands, although the quoted 13 mil. fee seemed too high to me anyway, so I'm glad we didn't get him. I imagine he was offered to us by Liverpool or his agent with unrealistic expectations of what we would pay under our new sensible recruiting policy. However, our scouting system seems pretty poor if that was the only option we had. On the other hand, it may be that they suggested strikers and the board or Harry didn't know them, so didn't pursue them. Either way what is the point of our scouting network if we have one?

From his interview on Sky last night Tony Fernandes seems to think Adel can fill the gap I do hope he is right. It would be great to see a fit, committed Adel Taraabt showing what he can do in the Premiership at last, although it seems risky to rely on it.

I don't often find myself agreeing with SoG but in this case I'm left with little doubt that on the striker front we have suffered from poor planning and management of the situation. It's not the ins and outs of deadline day and this or that deal falling through - it's the fact that a striker should have been acquired weeks ago, or at the very least a planned and prioritised series of targets. And anyone that thinks a 32yr old Defoe in January is the answer is deluded I'm afraid.

Petrasso was I thought a small pacy winger. Might work through the middle, but looked average during the pre season, hopefully come on since. Hitchcock has made it as far the bench at MK Dons, with 3 other strikers ahead of him. Still, I tend to agree that with hindsight (big qualifying statement) it looks like retaining him might have been a good fall back. However, I suspect we may see signing of a free agent to add to the forward line, especially if the Vargas transfer takes time to complete.

Hmmm, think we're nearly there on strikers when you look at H's probable formation. 4 at back, 1 striker, and 5 midfield (in whatever combo depending on opposition home/away). If that is how we setup this season, then one of our front three up - supplemented by a couple of attacking midfielders (Fer, Mutch, taraabt, hoillet, Phillips, nico, etc) should work. In which case the balance of the squad seems about right. Probably keeping taraabt and bringin Nico in will give us more back up in the key area where needed.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

A few clubs signed Kevin Phillips when he was over 30 and it paid off . Why would it not with Defoe ?

Agree with that. 3 strikers plus numerous attacking midfielders. That should get us through to Jan, hopefully!!

Agree with you taxi, Defoe is a world class finisher, I would rather him than Eto who Everton have just given a 2 year deal,
if Defoe got 10-12 goals that would see us lower mid table, I feel we will create chances this year with Tarbs, Phillips, & Hoilett I just hope the pressure doesn't get to Austin as our leading man

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

We will be be lower mid table when he joins IMO .

I can see no way that Harry Redknapp assisted by Glenn Hoddle will take that 25 (24?) players down . Too much talent , too much experience . IMO

If you look at his record Phillips was a Championship specialist, his goalscoring record is skewed by it. His last half-decent scoring in the PL was at Southampton in '03 where they ended up finishing bottom. My point is that expecting an ageing Defoe to hit the ground running and save us in February is a crazy situation to be in when we should have planned better and got a younger guy in this summer. And then Defoe is suddenly 33, 34, is that really what we want to take the club forward? Your mate Harry and the board did really well reshaping the rest of the squad and it's been exciting to see, but with regard to the strikers it's an undoubted balls up.

And Phillips went on to score 31 PL goals in 124 games when over 30 and tasked with marking the penalty spot.

Ironically this site went into a mini meltdown when we tried to sign a 23 year old, 1 in 3 striker who plays across the front line and takes a mean set piece.
