A disastrous summer, a lack of signings, no pre-season and even a 'technical error' can all be used as reasons for the opening day defeat at the City ground but it was two decent goals which undid Jose Riga's side against Forest. If fans wondered if the last 3 months would come back and haunt us then the answer was delivered in a devastating 5 minute spell.
Blackpool's side were an unfamiliar to each other as they were to the fans with nine new faces starting and juste four players on the bench amid rumours of player registration issues. The one departure last season which arguably hit Blackpool more than any other over the summer was Matt Williams. His role has been so integral in to the running of the club that his absence was the most noticeable. Whoever's fault it was that players weren't registered you still have to look at why we were having to sign crucial players 48 hours before the start of the season.
All the pre-match hopes that Forest might have a bad day soon vanished with a commanding first 30 minutes. The Seasiders showed plenty of spirit it in the opening 20 minutes but barely got out of their own half. Ironically, the visitors had the best chance when Nathan Delfouneso headed wastefully wide from a free-kick.l
But the Reds, with former 'Pool let down Andy Reid directed play from the centre of midfield, were in control.
They led when Reid's swerving long-range strike came back off the post and was calmly placed into the back of the net by debutant Antonio. Five minutes later and Chris Burke's fabulous curled shot from the edge of the box made it two.At that point you wondered whether England at Old Trafford or Nottingham Forest would achieve a cricket score.
However, Blackpool improved considerably after the break, playing with greater discipline in midfield, closing Reid down and posing problems in the final third through Delfouneso and Andrea Orlandi. Orlandi curled an effort just wide after a fine passing move and Forest began to tire and misplace their passes. Assombalonga had a couple of half-chances but was unable to get a clear opportunity and the goal he so craved. The home side also failed to make the most of numerous good positions but did not need the security of a third goal.
It was a 'free hit' for the home side and a few more teams in August may enjoy the same benefit if Blackpool don't get their act in order. All of that said, massive credit to the players for showing the commitment, passion and attitude that some at the club have lacked most of the summer.
