Not much to disagree with there. As you, seeing the results come in had me checking up our league position. It does not lie, but given recent result by SAINTS, there is growing optimism. A manager who has shown quite quickly & clearly, that he isn't here for anything more than to get SAINTS in shape for the future ( no matter what happens to him, if he proves too damned good!) and that augers well! | News Comment | 40 Years On ! The FA Cup 5th Round Saints V West Bromwich Albion (Part 1) at 17:00:35
My memories are of driving my green Transit minibus A 100 AOK with 13 passengers from Basingstoke to West Brom. Parking fairly close; watched the game, & coming out with my bro-in-law and a couple of mates to be confronted by a street full of West Brom looking for trouble heading towards us. In the middle of the road was a policeman of some high rank judging by the silver braid on his flat hat. My bro-in-law asked if he was able to help with escorting him through the massed ranks of West Brom as he only had a SAINTS replica top on. The high-ranking policeman advised him to turn it inside out....he then vanished into the West Brom! They took that as the signal to attack, which had us legging it towards my Transit. A young lad, Kevin Hardy was with me, and I urged him to go faster.....he said he was going as fast as he could, so I commented that the guy behind him was trying to stab him with a ruddy great butchers knife. He got the message & beat me back to the motor! Another passenger, Alan W., only just made it by leaping on the back step & hurtling himself through the back doors! A hasty retreat was made and no injuries suffered! The noise Saints supporters made at West Brom was incredible! |

I also went with Graham Duffin from Alton, who worked in Basingstoke at the time. We left late after work and a last minute decision to go. Not sure now who else was in his car,but it was a dark green Zephyr Zodiac which was driven at speed to get us there! We arrived as the game started, watching through the iron bars as we made our way round to try to get behind the goal. Totally outnumbered by Villa fans, we saw hardly any Southampton supporters. After seeing the home game draw with Villa, I am not sure what made me go to his workplace to ask if he fancied going that night. We went on to see every game then including the whole pantomime of the final. I lost touch with Graham, then quite remarkably spotted him at Cardiff 2003, sat below me! I went to greet him and almost fell over half the 1976 team who were in the same row as him! After a quick chat, I made my way back to my seat, remarking to a guy walking back up alongside me that I had not seen Graham since just after the '76 final and it brought back so many happy memories! He replied that he enjoyed it as well! I went to sit down with my son, who commented on the fact that he thought it was brilliant that I had just been talking to Jim McCalliog.....I was so taken with seeing Graham,I did not realise the silver-haired guy alongside me was indeed Jim! I had a photograph taken with Peter Rodrigues on the stairway at Cardiff just before the kick-off and one with Graham. We went to quite a few more games ( including RSC Anderlecht away, where Mick Channon was robbed of a genuine goal,) but then, sad to say, we drifted apart again because of work, family moving...good days though! |
| News Comment | Die Hard Saints Fans Set To Create Siege Mentality at 08:44:56
I think one of the major problems we have Nick, is the away support taking over so much of the Northam stand. It was like a home game for Palace! For other previous well supported teams, a similar story. I appreciate the fact that there is no choice really in giving the away side a percentage of the seating, and to a lesser extent when not cup games. Where the problem lies is with the then almost total disbursement of our OWN vocal support! They get wherever they can,but amongst the happy clappers in areas where you & I both sit for example, it is diluted to the extent of being almost non-existent. Palace were once again vociferous in their support, and they are a credit to their club. We are unable to compete as long as our vocal support is scattered. The answer may have been to have stuck the away support on the 'bend' to include some of Itchen stand. I am guessing this was not deemed a good idea due to hospitality boxes being above there? Having been away with Saints many times in the past plus a few times recently, the majority of grounds offer no more than they have to for view and never the prime position offered by Southampton F C. Unless or until either a new stand or top tier go on Northam stand,it will not change. No easy solution,Nick! Enjoy tonight,if we can! |

Total agreement! Like many season ticket holders,I'm not from So'ton. For Boxing Day it will be a trip from my Basingstoke home to Thatcham to pick up my sister, then down A34 to see the match then drop her back home before arriving home myself at about 23.30-2400hrs. I have not got Sky etc., my old age pension does not run to that. I spent enough getting the season ticket! I also have to think of petrol and parking costs each game, which are not cheap. Boxing Day at 11:00 a.m. would have been nice,15:00 p.m. ok., but after that is a Boxing Day write off. |

One thing I would say Clive, I stayed until the 5th goal myself, then went. Like many a supporter and season ticket holder ( just behind Nick I. ), I don't live in Southampton, but Basingstoke. I had my sister with me,from Thatcham side of Newbury. Even going early,(which I probably would have done anyway, unless there was a pen. shot-out,) left me getting in after 11 p.m. Had I left at full time...add about an hour! That start time was down to T.V. coverage, nothing else. I have to think seriously about the Boxing day fixture as, if I have my sister going (I'm sure she will want to) means getting in at gone 11o'clock once more, plus sharing the road in & out of Southampton with Arsenal supporters! Bang goes Boxing evening! |

Can you tell me what is happening to the area at the top of Kingsland? I was there from day 1 until hacked off by firstly losing my concession (took that on the chin & stumped up the extra) then being informed of the same-price-for-all policy. My grandson's seat suddenly commanded £400 more,so moved sideways. Is it for the press to join us & the seats where they are now (far too near to Mr Cortese!) converted to fat-cat seats ready for the upcoming European games we will be playing? Agree that Jack Cork,Lee,Guly & Ramirez need to be out there playing & January will see that...but not for us. Osvaldo & Yosh will continue to represent their countries & collect frequent flyer Avios pts., waiting their turn to replace 'the chosen ones',Wanyama will shed a few kilo over the International break, coming back like Fuller did; a shadow of his former self, (well, you can only hope?) and controlling midfield. |
