Tactical approach
at 07:28 2 Oct 2024

We have to stop giving the ball away so easily in dangerous (to us) areas. Santos, Andersen and Celar all giving the ball up too easily which lead to goals . When we are that wide open we can’t afford to be sloppy with the ball and we are really sloppy .

Match Thread: Hull is for Heroes
at 00:32 2 Oct 2024

At a bit of a loss as to where to start about this evening .

For the majority of the first half we played some of the best stuff I’ve seen in a while . Good movement from the front 5, moving the ball quicker, pressing well as a pack and pulling Hull all over the place .
However, in doing so , it left Field in the middle of the park on his own . That’s just suicidal .
Madsen or Andersen or both have use their brains and when one goes the other has to drop in, but no one did it . So we can look at the back 4 but they had no protection. Field is doing neither , not protecting the back 4 nor can he pass to a bloody Rangers player , but he has too wide an area to cover .

It left the players behind him exposed and boy did they look it.
I expect Ashby to start Saturday if there is still no JCS . Poor Santos got run ragged but he got very little help. Paal once again looks weak and easy target , Dunne slow and cumbersome and I really noticed Cook in the last 20 mins looking heavy slow and old.
In truth Hull could’ve got more in that last 20 mins ….and they look bang average .

Our pattern of play has to change!!
Rolled to Dunne or Cook, played to the full back who plays it down the line which is where the problems really start . How many times does Saito especially or Smyth for example receive the ball facing our own goal tight to the touch line with a defender bearing down on them ?
What are they supposed to do with this ? If we are lucky , they manage to get it back to the full back but often it gets lost and it’s not surprising.
This has to change ! We can’t just continue with something that doesn’t get any rewards.

Lots of work for MC to do but he and we are stuck . We don’t have the players to fill in the gaps in midfield and link play to the forwards . With Colbsck back soon hopefully maybe we have to do what we did last season and stop teams first before trying to be creative the other way , but I do wonder if Hayden was more important than we thought ?
Our wide players are too ‘wide’ leaving Madsen and Andersen and Frey too big an area to fill. Which then isolates poor Frey or Celar. And Celar looks lost in it .

We need to start again and play more compact but we are too soft, to physically frail, too slow around the pitch, too quiet, and too wide open right now and if it continues we are in for a long and painful winter.

Dembele

Exactly this .

The guy has a couple of poor games (1 of which he got an assist) and there is all this doubt now about his temperament perhaps or how good he really is.
He took Sheffield United and Plymouth by surprise so scouts for the clubs we played after that warned them and Millwall , Blackburn et al crowded him out, didn’t let him get the ball into feet or turn and drive into space . That’s football.
So he and Marti now have to work out another way of getting the best from him. It might take a little time but they will do so.

Strange viewing .

Keeping us happy with announcements is good PR indeed heading into tomorrow .
Didn’t understand his explanation at all regarding agents and contract lengths. Banged on about selling for the most money and players wages and agents wanting the best deals …stuff anyone with the most basic of knowledge would know…but yet ..the buying club will still just go the agent to find out the length of contract .
I thought , and I might be wrong , the comments about Kolli were as much to do with his attitude as well as signing a new deal. Which could be linked of course.

Just read someone say that they find Nourry impressive and annoying in equal measure and that’s a fair assessment.
He does seem more open to ideas and opinions than Hoos was which isn’t hard , but I like that about him at least

Varane’s red sets Rangers on road to Rovers ruin – Report

Great report Clive as I suspect it was the last thing you wanted to do yesterday .
As my frustrations grew ever stronger during the second half I did keep catching glimpses of the 600 odd poor sods who’d travelled up there and thought “Jesus….and I’m frustrated. That’s a long way to go in such a shit hour to watch this”

I’m one of MC’s biggest fans and when I read criticism of him on here I hate it if I’m being completely honest but he isn’t beyond a little bit of criticism here . I think he has to maybe try different things now and then. His subs are consistently good when needed but when things clearly aren’t working for whatever reason, he seems hesitant to go for it . we were crying out for pace up front , just to give them something to think about . Frey did admirably but once it was time to switch maybe put Smyth through the middle or even Lloyd. Let’s try to turn them around - a situation Armstrong was made for (who missed 2 clear runs at goal again yesterday ).
But it’s about taking pressure off of the midfield and back 4 and maybe stretching our opponents occasionally. Celar poses no threat at the moment when we have 11 so what’s the point?
Same with Dembele. He took Sheffield Utd and Plymouth by surprise but teams since have snuffed him out so we need to try something different . But at the moment it’s rinse and repeat .

Anyway I’m rambling. Chair on the bench tomorrow I think . Might kick a few up the arse but it’s a little deflating that we are now back to where we have been for the last 2 or 3 years - relying on Ilias to produce something as others seem unable

Smyth's goal
at 22:37 29 Sep 2024

I was furious at the time and still fuming now .

Not one hint of a foul by Smyth anywhere in the lead up .
It felt like the ref, the Sky commentary team and everybody else were there to see home a Blackburn win.
Scandalous decision

Never a straight Red Card
at 19:01 29 Sep 2024

Just re watched it again and my opinion has changed slightly .
During the game I thought it was a bit of a desperate lunge with the ball running away from him.
But re watching it , Varanes boot is sliding along the grass at point of impact . It’s a yellow at worst as others have said and borders on another awful awful decision by the referee .

No doubt at all that the Blackburn players got him sent off especially Travis who I hope gets utter dogs abuse at LR later this season.

Watching it live, Frey’s reaction to the challenge suggested he thought it was a Red and I thought if I’m honest Cook as captain could have looked after his player a little better instead of turning his back on him immediately.

Splitting hairs but I thought Cook could have protested and been at the referee a lot more yesteday as Travis did .
We are still too soft and to easy to get at at times

Another strange thread.

Anyone saying sack the manager is an absolute lemon.
Not read anyone going that far but I’ve read some nonsense on here today by a few who have barely posted in 10 months or so. Strange that.

However , we aren’t playing well and haven’t done really this season in any sort of consistency and its not beyond reason to question why and ask questions of the management and the players .

Said it last week and I’ll say it again that it seems that MC is just playing for time somewhat so he can build the team around Ilias. And why wouldn’t he build a team around the best player? However he will take time to get match fit and what if his ‘injury’ flares up again?

We need to be better without Chair. I do wonder if changing the system is the answer? But maybe that’s out of the question now JCS is back as the physios pet?
The centre of midfield, as said before is the big conundrum for me. We don’t create, get a foot in the ball , find space in holes, find passes beyond the midfield, turn and play forward or at the moment do much protecting if the back 4. And we don’t have players to do such things at the moment .

It’s just the observations and despite frustrations I know we need to be patient too.
But we need to improve that’s beyond question .

The no ones bothered Blackburn match thingy
at 15:06 28 Sep 2024

Another frustrating and infuriating performance.

How many times have we said the following this season already ;

“Stupidity from our central midfielder”
“Smyth has to score”
“We look slow and lacklustre”
“Just keep the ball”
“We are so easy to play against”
“F*ck sake it’s deflected off of Cook”
“Turn and go forward!!!”
“ we are not strong enough”

And there are many many more
The ref was garbage but we have to do better with what we control!!!

I’ve seen or been at every match this season and I’m saying the same things over and over and over.

MC indicates that this is not how he wants the team to play so why are these players playing the way they are ?
They have to take responsibility on the pitch and MC is to blame for anything it’s not getting his message across to this bunch because it’s repeat after repeat .

Sorry for the rant . Just so frustrating at the moment and hopefully that will change soon

We honestly thought Sky were using Blackburn tv for the coverage .

It’s the most biased tv coverage I’ve ever heard .

Worrying there is no JCS again. Hopefully it’s precautionary rather than a serious issue.

Frey aside we are very lightweight up top. But we do have pace in the side

Nervous about this one

Yes I agree. As I alluded to elsewhere I think Marti is waiting for Chair to return and then build the team around him . He is so pivotal to how we play that MC us plugging holes until then .

He does drive us mad at times but we have all seen how much brings but especially in his absence
