OK, so here is my ex- referee's assessment of the action yesterday.
First Swindon goal. Never a free kick as no contact at all. Poor defending from the free kick though resulted in goal
First U's penalty. Probably lucky we did not have a man sent off as the tackle on the Swindon goalie prior to the award of the penalty was atrocious. Foot in goolies?
Second U's penalty, debatable. When will players stop throwing themselves to the ground when running side by side. Again no real contact made to make him fall like he did.
Second Swindon goal. Probably the only decent move in the game that resulted in a "proper goal".
Swindon penalty. How the referee was able to judge this as a handball I just don't know? It certainly was not "hand to ball" as is the required basis for the decision. Defender's arm was in a prior position to allow jumping for the ball. Surely there was no intention. With all of the above we still deservedly lost..... 1-0?
Luckily we are only in Div.2 because if we had VAR for this game we would probably still be playing..
Also luckily the Boss was in the stands for his earlier bookings. What would have happened yesterday with him on the sideline one can only imagine!

A fair assessment. DC also thought that we were fortunate with the second penalty, after Gordon's challenge on the keeper. I think you've got the pens in the wrong order though!

Yep, pretty fair assessment. I can see why our second looked a bit iffy, but from my viewpoint the keeper didn't have both hands on the ball, Gordon slid in and played the ball, but momentum took him through to collide with the keeper. Whilst rolling in agony, the keeper still had the presence of mind to stick out a leg to trip Anderson in front of a virtual open goal. Still don't get why it wasn't a red card, there was no way it was an 'accidental' foul.

I'm assuming the referee felt the keeper was making a valid attempt to play the ball and thus was only booked under the double jeopardy rule. You could argue he got this wrong too.

There was a defender between Anderson and the goal. So maybe that's why no red card? Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I think he could have easily stepped over the keepers trailing leg and slotted it in.

1) We need to work more on set piece defending as the defenders for the 1st goal just did not read where the ball was possibly going and a defender should have been at the far post where Swindon's first goal went in and the marking should also have been better for their 2nd goal. 2) Our midfield need to work more on getting involved in the attack more & reacting more quickly to supply the strikers up front if we are playing 4-2-3-1 Esp if Hopper is up front as although I'm not doubting his ability as a player his goal scoring ability is just not good enough. 3) Cowley needs to make substitutions sooner rather than later as Swindon had more fresh legs through their subs and he didn't react quickly enough. 4) Iandolo was very unlucky to be sent off tbh as he went for the ball and collided with the Swindon player. 5) I'm sorry but the refs decision making was poor - though at least he was consistently poor as he made a number of bad decisions against both sides.
