But in Trumps deal it was stipulated if the Taliban broke any of the agreement the USa would be straight back in with overwhelming force.
It is Biden that has done this, not Trump. It's a mess.
Make you wonder why Biden did not wait until November the start of the harsh Afghanistan Winter when tye Taliban usually return to their villages to see the Winter out and give the Afghanistan Army a chance to consolidate.
In reality, Biden either had to withdraw or go in with significantly increased resources just to get back to where it was when Trump signed the deal yet alone be in a position to engage in combat. The American public don’t want their military to be in Afghanistan period while the Afghan public don’t vote in the US elections, so Biden’s priorities will always be domestic. Not saying that’s right, it’s just the way I see it.

That's a good post, Biden is just honouring the agreement Trump made. Of course it's been a mess, but all withdrawals are
The US public doesn't want their troops there. This is why they threw the Afghans under the bus.I don't have the figures, but I believe there were very few troops left there prior to this and very few actively involved in trying to find Al Queda. It was symbolic for the Taliban and gave then to green light to go
It's typical of the Americans though. Everywhere they go they leave behind a mess and despair.

There were 2.500 troops left at the time of the withdrawal , not enough to continue the fight but enough of a presence to keep a lid on things relatively speaking

As is the case with the glorious Russians although they tended to send in tanks but mainly against those who don't toe the line.

Biden has worked to American public opinion, and clearly the lives of Afghans mattered not to him or Trump. No president from Bush on comes out of this well. If anyone thinks Trump would have done this better, then just read his statement yesterday. Get the **** out, then bomb. Don't worry about those left behind or the collateral damage. Shameful by all involved.

Agree and what I don't get is the withdrawal of troops with thousands of foreign nationals including Americans still in the country.

Either a supreme failing in intelligence or extreme stupidity by the US State Department and FCO here. Either way Raab should be resigning. Peter Carrington went for less and took responsibility in 1982. Just shows what a corrupt government and incompetent opposition we have at this time.

2,500 troops. How many of those would have been infantry? Many would have been HQ staff, logistics, support etc. How many of those would have been able to go out on patrol? A few hundred at the very most.

A patrol won’t have any more than 16 in it.

In terms of capability, Trump or Biden, Johnson or Corbyn, our choices are very limited these days.
Was listening to someone who’d previously served in Afghanistan and they explained they’d anticipated these problems after Trump signed the deal as the Americans had withdrawn significant numbers of troops to the extent there was very little they could do. They’d been told not to get “too close” to the Afghans who’d worked alongside them, but it was hard when you worked closely with people, trusted them and were fearful of what would happen going forward.

The recent events are all Biden but the withdrawal agreement in the first place, it seems experts were dubious about it.
As someone pointed out on the QT Afghanistan special, why would they be worried about 20 years inAfghan when they've spent a LOT longer in Korea. The USA have had soldiers in South Korea since 1945.
It's done and dusted now though and we are left to pick up the pieces. Raab should resign, when it's something as big as this no government minister can be on holiday and delegate. If these people can't deal with that notion then resign and let someone in who can.

The US has a token force on the Korean border. It's 30,000, but the North Koreans could overrun that with ease

30,000 a TOKEN force? Don't be ridiculous. A modern force with artillery and air support, 30k is far more than token. The 2,500 the USA left in Afghan, that is token. If there had been 30,000 US troops (with artillery and air support) in and around Kabul, do you think the Taliban would have gone near?

30k, is nothing to what the N Koreans can muster. It's been estimated that they could be overrun in about 3 hours
The Taliban, didn't have to go near Kabul or anywhere else, they just waited. The US has the equipment and resources, we have the time. Guess which prevailed?

The North Koreans may be able to muster more men, but the US with the and South Korea have access to some of the worlds best technology and weaponry and far superior air power which would cause infantry significant issues.

Ignore him, he is a fool who believes the watering hole(s) that he frequents. We both know that the only way that the North will overrun the South is with massive Chinese support.

It was Trump that did the deal and negotiated with the terrorists
Trumps deal was sensible. A step by step withdrawal with the Taliban having to be kept in check at every step or the withdrawal would be cancelled.
Biden absolutely made a pigs ear of that.
I know some people on here don’t like Trump, whatever that’s fine. But let’s not start putting our hands over our eyes and ears with regards to what’s going on here.
This is Bidens mess, or indeed whoever is advising him in his administration anyway. I highly doubt he’s decided to do this all by himself.

I would suggest after 4 years of evidence, he would certainly have gone about this better. His record in foreign affairs is exemplary and it would be completely inaccurate to claim otherwise.
