I'm curious about this, as all of these domains seem to have a monthly/yearly fee.
I assumed that (if you know what you're doing) then it was a one-off fee to register then that was it. Is there a monthly fee paid to the internet-keepers (no idea who gets this money!) or is this just domain companies trying to get a consistent income flow? |  | | |

From what I know of it these companies have at some point bought these names and then let you think you own them in exchange for an annual fee. Or something like that. The internet is a complex vagina. |  | | |

I've recently registered a domain with http://www.1and1.com/domain-names and I'm also setting up a website and an online shop with them. Works great so far.
I also heard that Hostgator is supposed to be quite good but I don't have any experience with them |  |

Much of a muchness IMHO.
I'd consider what you are going to do with it. If you are going to host a site on it (and why else would you be buying one unless you are squatting on one) I'd look for the hosting package you want, as most will supply a domain free with said package.
Hosting is another mare, so many options but as with anything, you get what you pay for.
If your site is going to become part of your livelihood, treat it as such and go with Rackspace or someone similar. If its a hobby thing you can afford to be shop around a bit.
Media Temple are ok, but they were recently bought by Go Daddy. So far no major issues with them |  | | |
