Tottenham Wing Back Linked With Southampton
Thursday, 17th Aug 2023 10:45

Saints are reported to be interested in a deal to take a right wing back from Tottenham Hotspur, but it a double edged sword as it would surely mean that Kyle Walker Peters would be leaving the club.

Reports on the72.co.uk say that Saints are interested in a deal with Spurs to take Djed Spence on a season long loan.

The 23 year old right sided player joined Spurs last summer from Middlesbrough for around £15-20 million depending on which report your believe, but failing to break into the Spurs first team squad on a regular basis, 4 sub appearances from the bench being his only Premier League action, plus a couple of cup run outs, he was loaned to Rennes in France for the second half of the season.

He started well at Rennes, but a knee injury ruled him out for the last part of the season.

However he does have extensive experience, not only at Middlesbrough where he made 63 appearances, but also at Nottingham Forest on loan where he played 39 times in their promotion winning season from the Championship, his form leading to Spurs buying him.

Now it seems that Saints & Tottenham are talking about a loan deal for the player who turned 23 just over a week ago.

It is said that Spurs see St Mary's as the ideal place to send him out on loan, as they did with Kyle Walker Peters 3 1/2 years ago, they see it as ideal due to the possession based game played under Russell Martin.

If Spence arrives then it would be ironic as it would surely mean that Kyle Walker Peters himself will have left the club, although Spence is also able to play as an out and out right winger as he did with Forest in around half the games he played, so playing both he and KWP might also be a good option.

If replaced Bree in the squad, yes. If KWP, no. Anyway, Palace after him, so won't come here. At 6ft, would add height to squad. Seen as a combative FB who likes to bomb forward. Just don't want to get rid KWP and keep Bree. No need to sell any more class players.cut wages by moving on £70k per week Aribo etc

Loans, Loans, Loans. Is there any chance at all that we can sign just one experienced player on a permanent deal please ?

Not too much to ask of a club who’s supposed ambition is to return to The Premiership without delay is it?

After what was said at the recent fans forum I’m increasingly beginning to think that our owners sole intention is to balance the books and promotion is but an afterthought.

The players we are after don't want to sign permanently for a championship club - Downes, Holgate, Spence. If we start looking at players from other Championship clubs then a permanent deal is more likely.

As I think Ive stated before we have compensation packages for Selles and Jones plus we are still paying Ralph salary, and although SR wont admit it a large amount of "balancing the books" is eaten up doing this. We are also paying salaries to players who are NEVER going to be in th squad so we almost have to write off that money and ship them out. Even if its a big loss it balance the books. So dont expect any marque signings.

Glad that kenchilds70 (above) reminded us of the outstanding debts we are still carrying.

But back to Spence. We were quoted as being interested in him, and he went to Spurs without knowing that he was never going to be a first choice starter...along with Joe Rodon and others who failed to make the grade at Spurs - after they sold KWP to us.

There aren't enough people left in the administration at SMS to remember what it's like dealing with Daniel Levy. If I had any say, I would never enter into conversation with Levy, let alone strike a deal with them. Historically we've been scre*ed by Spurs at every turn.

Remember the mass exodus of 2014 RoKo said judge us after the window closes
It's the same again now so I am holding off from judging SR until I see the squad in September

Underweststand I know exactly what you mean about Levy, I would not trust him as far as I could bench press an elephant. Although Rupert Lowe isn’t exactly high on my Christmas card list, he gets credit where it is due for one quip he made about Levy back In 2001. In the aftermath of Spurs poaching Hoddle from us then Dean Richards we made an official complaint to the PL about their conduct. Lowe had been quite vocal on the radio and in the press prior to the hearing labelling the Spurs board “a bunch of North London yobbos” and calling the relatively newly appointed Levy “another cowboy in charge” (with previous reference to Alan Sugar). He got told to apologise for his remarks at the hearing which I don’t think went down well with Lowe. Outside of the hearing after it finished he was interviewed for radio by either the BBC or LBC and the interviewer asked him if, in a spirit of reconciliation, there was anything nice he could say about Levy. After a long pause, Lowe said “Well…. I must say Mr.Levy was immaculately dressed today, he had Spurs on his blazer badge, Spurs on his tie, in fact, I think he even had Spurs on his shoes”

LondonSaint - a classic from Wupert and what a brilliant damning summary of spuds 'north london yobbos :). He played a blinder over getting £8m for Richards too.

saintmark - be careful of criticising the running of the club - you'll be chased out of town by the locals waving pitchforks :)
